I have a feeling once King Kunta leaked, he knew the full leak was coming, so he just released it.
But no, it's not free. $14.99 I downloaded a bootleg copy last night, but I still plan to pick up a physical copy next week when its in stores.
I listened to the front half last night, and it's pretty dope so far. A lot of jazz and funk influence in this one.
THREAD TITLE SAYS ON ITUNES YOU FUCKS
Unfortunately, my geography is preventing me from getting it, but what I've heard makes me think it's pretty great.
soooooo
is it good? better than his first? ....which arguably was a decent album, but shouldnt be hard to top lol
By first do you mean Section 80?
Either way, I haven't actually listened to it in entirety, so I couldn't form an opinion.
no sorry.
i should have clarified
i meant his good kid maad city album
totally forgot he had so many tapes before his actual being to signed and dropping gkmc

But yeah. All the albums listed hv been really gd albums.
He put an live sounding version of "I" on the album. It's real funk music & 90s influenced. But not as 90s as Joey. The production of the album is fuckin awesome.
But this all depends on what you're looking for.

i'm starting to get a bit tired of this mentality where the closer something sounds to "90's" rap it deserves more praise.
i know we're all weepy-eyed for the golden age but i have so many friends who refuse to listen to anything or anybody new coming out because of this closed-minded retrospective approach to music.
this becomes the norm for "da real hip-hop heads". hence, when artists try their damndest to replicate the sound of music made 19 years ago, it gets placed on a pedestal. looking at you joey.
idk. i'm torn because i obviously love that era's music as much as anybody, but it seems as though this over-the-shoulder attitude towards rap could potentially just serve to stagnate the genre.

I like Joey because of his production.
Truth Iscariot
03-17-2015, 11:50 PM
I think the thing about Joey is he imitates the era well. That being said his next album needs to stray away from that. I stand to argue that we are on the cusp of a new golden age. With artists like Lamar, Cole, and Bronson coming into their own, legends like Raekwon and Ghostface still dropping new material and a bevy of up and coming artists releasing their debuts this year. 2015 is shaping up to be the best year in hip hop in a while I think. I am so stoked to hear Mr Wonderful now.
Also let's not forget the illness dropped in the last quarter of 2014.

dead man I agree - I don't want an imitation of 90s rap, but I do like a throwback to it so long as it's original. 90s production (at least the jazzy boom bap style) itself was a throwback. All cyclical, time and place and a way to do it all IMO

it's just a completely different record tbh, in style, sound, and scope. really hard to compare the two, but the more I listen to Pimp a Butterfly, the harder it gets for me to temper my enthusiasm for it. I have to consciously stop myself from calling it "genius" and "brilliant." It's so layered.

But on a more serious note, Jazz outweighs Funk on this album imo. The first track is heavily influenced by funk. But I mean George Clinton on that shit bruh.
I hear more jazz. And Kendricks lines are dope as fuck. Y'all listening to slow if you think his lyrics aren't killing it
it's a trip through the history of popular black music at the same time it comments on what it is to be black in america - yes, it's genius.

I do not agree. If Waka dropped this album I would marvel at his more complex and improved lyrics. Praise him for featuring Billal and Raposdy and wonder why he was going hard in the paint when he had such deep poetic concepts in his repertoire
To each his own but this is the type of hip hop we need imo

Yea I turned it off after 5 songs..I can't get jiggy with this shit
to me it sounds like he's trying to mold himself into a Nas/Andre 3000 hybrid of sorts
I mean if you think he's making great moves with bringing different genres into the game cool
I mean that's what Rakim based his style on was the use of Jazz instrumentals
with all the hype around the album anyone will say anything to get a high five
but I'm like nah...take that shit elsewhere son, right now Tetsuo & Youth is my go to album
I currently am catching up on some other stuff, but that Rhapsody broad>>>
some of the production is good though..some lines are nice

i liked it alot im not like its classic or nun
not yet at least
copped a physical tho
brutal line of reasoning re: Waka Flocka. "If Milli Vanilli made Illmatic..."
that he followed up GKMC with this is in itself exactly what he's driving at in the album - the balls/confidence/love for his craft that it took to drop something completely different from what people wanted/expected, and the ambition and execution of this album - it's a phenomenal record. I agree with Diode in that, his voice, and the musical numbers themselves, may not be immediately palatable, but the more I listen to this, the more clear it becomes that this is a work of genius. Everything is placed perfectly, and it crescendos with a haunting conversation with Tupac. Everything is closely layered and metaphorical.
people will try to pin it down with comparisons, but truthfully there's nothing even remotely similar to this album - maaaaaybe Low End Theory but that wasn't nearly as ambitious. This is an album to listen to and think about and reflect on, not something you bump in the car.
it's not for everyone, and I understand why some aren't as high on it as I am, or at all. but to say this is wack or contrived just makes you sound foolish and unknowledgeable.

Plus his success & recognition he's receiving is going to make his underground fans fall off of him just because. Imo, seen this happen to a few underground artist & it's usually because of the hype & new found glory. He no longer seems like this hidden gem or secret that we felt as tho we discovered.
Also unless you're into blk culture it's not going to appeal to you at all.
