ok live listening/critique session
track 2, yea this is that atlanta rip off shit. it goes, just find it corny dre is following trends. 808 music. the delivery/flow and shit smh.
track 3. genocide. this shits dope. the beat. don't fuck with this jamaican bitch tho. skipped.
track 4. fire. i recognise the sample. feel like i messed with it but i can't place it. yea this is coolness
track 5. long ass intro. the bassline was worth the wait tho. drums are dope. dre the master of the clean mix. dre worked with 50 too much. im like 2 and a half minutes into it and he's just talking. lol. yea dre just ruined this when he started rapping lmao. whoever wrote his shit on this is wack. probably em and his wack rushed delivery skip. that bass is fire tho
track 6. skip
track 7. got dope as shit when xzhibit came in.
track 8. stayed for cube. left pretty early. skip.
track 9. beats a banger
track 10. why he giving these rock beats to snoop and cube tho. snoop going in tho.
track 11. BEAT IS CRAZY. this game? THIS IS FIRE. was feeling the aggression but then the weirdo delivery of second dude or if it was still game i dunno. the beat goes tho. hook/outro cool.
track 12. skip
track 13. skip
track 14. UNGHHHHHHHH. this is nasty.
track 15. was gonna skip until the beat dropped. skipped tho wack.
track 16. FIRE. classic sample. he layered in some other shit tho with the strings. this is nasty.
CONCLUSION -
i didnt give this nearly a thorough enough listen. the production imo was a little too much. shit was overproduced. not just as far as the singing and switching between artists and shit, but the beats themselves changed up alot too
feels too modern for me to dig it on first listen but i'm a haterjust feels like he's trying to fit in with where hip hop is now, instead of defining how hip hop sounds. but keep in mind during my quick listen i'm comparing him to his own work. the chronic changed hip hop. the chronic 2001, when dropped in 99 helped define how the 2000's would sound. this on the other hand sounds like him copying the styles of others from the past 10 years instead of putting something out others would copy
on first listen animals is my favorite shit. then probably the short track with game.

Man you can't do any sort of review after 30 mins lol.
I think people should take a few days of listening before reviewing.
That applies to every album btw not just this one.
People so quick to get reviews out they don't pay enough attention to the music imo
uh-oh
08-07-2015, 08:44 PM
yo after looking on wikipedia, track 4 which i dug, was co produced by BINK, one of my favorite underrated producers.
and the animals track was the one dj premier contributed to. i figured he had a hand in the one with game lol
i really don't hear preme on that tho, listening now knowing he did it i guess i can see it, more in the sample arrangement of the verses, the drums sound like some dilla shit, but with dre crispiness, and you know dre did the overproduced hook
but that shit goes

Dre is a beast at production & 2001 is usually in constant rotation regardless of how he's been as of late

im overly analytical though, i've become stupid picky the older i get, generally don't even like hip hop anymore, so my opinions should be taken with a few grains of salt
my main reason for the quick listen/review was to curtail the mindless love for this album, based purely from the hate in my heart for anything massive amounts of people like lol

I'm probably one of the biggest westcoast rap fans you'll find...I thought this was absolutely terrible.
All on Me was a great song, Talking to my Diary was good, outside of those two I didn't like anything. All ridiculously over produced. Half of the songs just switch to a new beat half way through for no reason at all. Guys like Snoop and Xzibit rapping on beats that completely don't go with how they sound. It all sounds so new school and technological too.
To be fair, half of you guys are probably Drake and Lil Wayne fans on here so that could be why you love it and I hate it. If you LOVED Chronic and 2001, and want to hear an album like those, don't listen to this. It couldn't be more opposite. It's pretty much exactly like how My House - Warren G and Nate Dogg, on a mixtape called Regulate G Funk Era Part 2, sounds absolutely nothing like fans of the original G Funk Era enjoyed.
I physically couldn't listen to For The Love of Money without saying "Fuck this shit" and looking up Bone Thugs version on Youtube. Dre is REALLY heavy on the guitars on this, and I couldn't help but thinking "If you're going to use guitars, why the hell aren't you doing it like you did in the absolute classic Beautiful but Deadly by DOC, which is one of Dre's best produced songs?
I dunno. As a guy who loved Chronic, loved 2001, and listens to NWA, Comptons Most Wanted, DOC, Westside Connection, Above The Law, BG and Drestah and all of the westcoast legends, this album was abysmal to me. A shame to cause with the movie coming out, and with the name of this album being called Compton, I was hoping to hear some of the music which put these kids from Compton on the map in the first place. I wanted to hear what got them to the big show but instead was met with what they think the 2015 rap fans want to hear. I'll still with my Souls of Mischief and Too $hort I guess.

I'm just disappointed is all. As a few said, 2001 is an incredible album. NWA were an incredible rap group.
Put it this way, if Dre's new album was on GTA 5, it would be on Radio Los Santos instead of Westcoast Classics.

If you want the old album, they will have them on iTunes. I don't comprehend how people expect artists to make the same albums over and over. Then again you like Too Short so yeah, debating with you would be like listening to a, well Too Short album. I hope your 40 cuz you give off a old and lame vibe.

Completely true. Based on the name and the ties to the movie, I thought he'd be trying to drop something a bit more similar to his other albums. I'm not really into Drake and Kendrick Lamar and whoever else and was hoping Dre was gonna drop something that sounded similar to what I used to like. When I hear NaS dropping an album I'm hoping for something similar to Illmatic, not something where he's trying to "stay relevant".
I don't see how Dr Dre has to change his musical style to "stay relevant". As you guys said, 2001 and Chronic are incredible albums. If he dropped a new version of one of those, wouldn't that be just as incredible?

I expect them to keep the same kind of music. I was a huge Kanye West fan when he made College Dropout but then that awful album with Love Lockdown came out and it all went downhill. If I'm a fan of a rapper, it's because they have a certain sound or something. So when they change that sound, I don't immediately like them because it's the same artist.
I'm 23. I grew up listening to Hadaway and Sash :D

dre is a producer first, and a rapper like, third, so you can't really compare him to Nas
but, I'm gonna say this and this is the truth
if he dropped 2001 today, it wouldn't be as successful
the game has changed. snoop and cube and em don't sound the same anymore
neither does dre
which means doing the same thing will always fall short
you got to change it up to stay fresh
warren g just dropped a record too
how's that one in comparison? I wouldn't know, because I haven't heard it
Oh, so your a hipster. LOL You wasn't even making sperm when Chronic came out bro. That's why you like it so much, you wan't to connect to a "different time". This urge to be different has made you mundane. You seem like a cool dude though, so lighten up and go download a Gucci Mane album.

Dre's albums aren't really about Dre rapping though so I was just kind of comparing album quality to album quality.
Warren G's new record, or at least My House, is pretty terrible. I don't get why he names his tape after the Regulate album, maybe my favourite album of all time, and then doesn't keep the G Funk style.

I probably wasn't born when Scarface came out. I still think it's a cracking film. Alright let's not talk a different time. Nipsie Hussle - Hussle In The House, Mac Lucci - Cali Life, the entire Game LAX album. I loved those because they have the kind of sound I like. I don't think I'm really "different". My favourite top 3 rappers are 2pac, NaS and I go back and forth but right now probably Warren G. Not exactly some underground unknown guys. When I started to like 2pac every second dude on the planet loved 2pac. That just kind of switched to other people and I kept liking him and went into the music more. When I was like 12 I wasn't thinking about being different, I was thinking "Fuck you Playback FM, Radio Los Santos for life".
It's not just old school music I like, it's just mainly. Half the world prefers music from the 90s though. uh-oh was saying Dre's on an "Atlanta" thing. I'm not really sure of what that means specifically but I'm more into the "California" thing.
It's the same as Ludacris for me. I absolutely LOVED Word of Mouf, but now his songs are complete and utter shite cause he's "trying to stay relevant". I suppose Destroyers right though in saying that although we all love 2001 and whatever other albums, they wouldn't have the same commercial success these days so what would be the point in making them?

All music is subjective. People like what they like. I like dope hip hop. This was pop music set in a semi hop hop semi r'n'b backdrop of ever changing nonsense.
I just like dope beats. Dope rappers. Dope singers. Following the same format. I feel like he tried doing too much in too little of a space.
I wouldve enjoyed this more as an instrumental album. As actual music i cant fuck with it
