View Full Version : other than Premo, who is even arguably better than Dr. Dre?

in terms of the entirety of their career, consistency, quality of beats/production, etc. For me, he seems to be consensus #2, but curious to see other opinions. btw Compton is dope, and so is the Purple Tape.

but based on your pallet the vibes may differ

Dilla though>>>>

he probably gets the most respect out of anyone with such a small catalog of material
I put Kanye above him for his prolific output

I think a lot more people are more talented than Dr. Dre is.

I feel like, Dr. Dre has the best ear though.

He's one of those, do this, do that- so I kind of lose 'respect' for him in that sense, but yeah, dude has an incredible ear.

I haven't heard anyone else whose beats give me the feeling Dre's give me. Shivers down the spine stuff.

I'm not a big beat person so idk, but Dre's beats resonate with me unlike most others.

Kanye and Premo do too tho. Maybe I'm biased because when I was first getting interested in hip hop Dre beats were everywhere.

He's number one for me.

I can respect that. He's so different from Premier that they're basically 1a and 1b, just depends on my mood. I got into rap through west coast artists, so Dre's beats are more meaningful for me personally than Premier's. Dre just hasn't put out as much work I feel, whereas Premo is always in the cut.

I like Dilla, appreciate him and all that, but imo he's a bit overrated.

dres somewhere in my top 10

as far as consistency goes no one is as consistent as premier in my opinion

i gotta let dres new shit sink in but he makes alot of club shit i don't fuck with at all, not just the recent album i just mean in general throughout his career

kanyes another whose inconsistency, and really its more preference than anything i don't like the modern synth heavy shit everyones adopting but i'd put him over dre as far as just making beats

but thats my flaw as well, i'm judging it from a making beats perspective and not as much as a pure production perspective

but i'd probably put alchemist over him. premier and kanye. i could make arguments for others but those are the only ones i would probably put over him no matter how i'm feeling.

so i guess he's in my top 5.

uh-oh
08-07-2015, 08:54 PM
i'm also of the same mind that dilla is criminally overrated in death. but everyone feels shit different. i get why people like his shit so much. i just like alot of others more. rza's another one who i think is stupid ill but makes alot of shit i could live without.

How come no one's mentioned Eminem and his terrible production?

good example of how to answer a question in the same sentence that you ask it.

as for Pete Rock, dude is obviously responsible for several classics, and is a legendary producer, but I feel like his catalogue is a little thin to fuck with Dre. he's top 10 for sure though. Dre's been one of the dopest across several decades, few can match that kind of longevity and consistency.

I actually didn't even think of Pharrell, good call. I for sure underrate him.

Diode is on point with RJD2 as well. Def not on Dre's level imo, in the same way I couldn't throw Madlib in that discussion, but not for lack of talent.

DJ Premier's greatest accomplishment might have been making Group Home listenable. His work on Livin' Proof (the full album) is some of his best for a pair of rappers who definitely didn't deserve it.

I'd put Kanye West in serious contention.

J Dilla is dope, but not on the same level.

I personally enjoy Jake One and Madlib production just as much as Dr. Dre's if not more in many cases, but it wouldn't be accurate to say that they're "arguably better" because theyre not.

Amen.

Dr Dog is Split Eight.

Necro can't be considered because he ruined most of his best beats by rapping over them.
