Why don't more text battlers take part in the topical side?

Genuine question.

The AOWL popping right now with its highest league attendance for a good while, 20 competitors signed in, so this isn't some cheap attempt to recruit.

We actually have quite a few former text battlers taking part, I know Fraze, Bobby Bigelow, Ullr, Razah and Frank ALL text battled at one point in time and some still do.

My question is, why aren't more of you? In my day it was all about being rounded enough to compete over both fields of text. What is it that doesn't appeal to you guys? And I guess more so, how could we make it a more appealing concept to some of you guys?

Shorter lined verses, perhaps? Would a topical spin on the 10BBL idea be of interest to more of you, say a 16 line limit? Not necessarily for the AOWL, but perhaps an idea for a league while the AOWL season is finished with?

OT: 16 is cool but that's basically just the short verse tournament's final. which was a good tourney. but writing that densely places hyper-focus on the schemes (mechanics, if you want) kinda neglecting all the other creative aspects; both from writers and voters.

they're just completely different skillsets that happen to have some common ground in the form of rhyming words.

if you have good vocab, sense of flow/multis, imagery and story telling, topicals come easy to you.

if you have creative concepts, harsh wording, word play, and humour battles will come easy to you.

there aren't a lot of people who have both skillsets in equal amounts.

topicals are harder and more nuanced than battle verses no question. takes more time to figure out how to write a good topical than it is to fall in line with the battling trends. voting on topicals is also more work. these would be my guesses.

Because I'd prefer to use my time doing more entertaining things. Battling was fun for the competition aspect, but the trends of battling make it monotonous and boring. Writing 'topicals' is a fun exercise, but I only compete with myself and I don't have anything left to prove or say. WOW THAT'S SO POIGNANT or OMG SO CLEVER. It feels pretentious.

Not really - the general idea of topical writing means it gives the writer many more options in way of concepts than text battling, so you can write about gay stuff if you want, or if you are like me and prone to writing about serial killers (for example - my latest OM) you can do that too.

Bags is right I think. Some guys just have a natural ability to throw out a dope text battle in like 10 minutes. On NC I see a lot of guys not really focusing on their first line, so basically all you have to do is come up with like 5 punches and word them, then rhyming them off is easy. Some dudes just kill with that.

Where as I take a few days to write a topical. I need to click with a writing style and stuff. I start with the topic. Usually think about it a couple of times on the first or second day, write down the basic plotpoint the next day, write out a few key lines the next and then around the final day I start rhyming it and putting it together. Shit takes a while and is soooooo much easier to procrastinate while writing.



To be honest, I only started doing topicals back in 2008 cause I wasn't getting anywhere with text battling on LB. I was still fairly abysmal and could only to gun/battle bars (You couldn't step on lines in a basketball court, You couldn't pop caps opening battles blah blah). I discovered topical battling on HHA with YD and Word.smyth and shit and kept it up. If I was awesome at text I'd probably have never given it a shot.
