This same thing happens in the Premier League all the time.

The teams (people) not in with a shout of winning the league title have nothing to play for other than pride - and so will slack off.

It's generally only those gunning for gold, and those fighting against relegation (or not making the playoffs) that have anything to play for.

Next week is the final week of a 16 week season. It's understandable that those who've competed throughout will be showing signs of tiredness that they didn't in game one.

The real business starts after the season ends, with the playoffs (effectively our World Cup Qualifiers) before our World Cup begins (The Winter Topical).
