I agree witty.

Well maybe not. At least top 10. Just for building the style itself.

But there are so many different types of lyricists in the sense of how they flow and structure shit it gets tricky.

U can't give him extra credit for building the style in a goat discussion based purely on rapping talent tho

pun is top 5 on 'talent' whatever that means.

L is dope but i wouldn't place him that high.

I disagree.

Although id still put him top 10 cuz he was ridiculous with the bars

But i mean if were talking top 5 or 10 if any of them use his cadence i have a hard time putting them above him.

But i mean when it comes to just rapping talent id put jay electronica up there and hes basically done nothing lmao.

Black thought

Az

Old Em

Etc.

All are different stylistically but they all get intricate and ridiculous. There are tons of them though and i could change them on any given day so i wont even try to make a list.

But i see your point. Plenty of dudes use styles others like rakim kane kool g etc all fathered and id put above them so i see your argument.

as far as MC talent, I think that's a reasonable opinion to have. idk if I'd give him top 5, but it's not that far-fetched.

for my money, Pharoahe Monch is top 5 along with Pun, Biggie and Em and then idk.

Of course you can....why not?
quaker oats I agree 100% with your post...I just think he was incredibly ahead of his time.

Thinking about it, maybe I jumped the gun on top 5, he was ill as fuck tho, but yeah I've been listening to his shit like I do every so often and it got me hyped.

Cuz I feel like then ur taking in other factors

Negating the whole "purely on rapping skills" concept

Idk I can see the argument that being ahead of his time is part of his Skillset

Still tho

To me

To fully respect the discussion ur posing........all rappers should be heard without anything in mind aside from rapping talent

Era should be irrelevant

Though again I see the argument to the contrary

break down what makes the generic top 5 better than undergroundish dudes with butter smooth flow and lyrics like asher (not that stupid album, greenhouse effect mixtapes etc), apathy, or bronson

celph titled is not good, apathy has skills but they're still both underground white nerds who have a particular sound. that of underground white nerds. louis logic is a black guy who sounds like an underground white nerd, so it's not a race thing just an fyi.

i would never listen to asher roth. not even on accident.

i fuck with bronson but he is a fairly popular albanian jew, not an underground white nerd.

if the older heads don't speak to you - a self-professed upper middle class twenty-something ginger jew - that's probably accurate. please refrain from spreading that endemic, though.

because they're not diverse MCs.

in all seriousness, have you ever performed on a microphone to music before? If so, then you would understand at least a little bit the levels of technicality that guys like Pun, Biggie, Pharoahe, etc mastered. Obviously Asher Roth is a better MC than people who aren't good, but there are literally thousands of dudes who are on his level. He is an underrated lyricist I guess, but I find his lyricism and style to be mostly boring; he's like a less funny Lil Dicky. I actually liked that College song though lol.

This is like the dumbest conversation ever.

Top 5 all comes down to preference.

If you did a Top 100 list, all those 100 rappers with technically have 'pure rapping talent' as far as being able to structure a verse / flow.

My name Grafh ya'll

Not having Em near the top of that list is insane.

As far as opinion, whether or not you like the content is opinion, but technical skill is measurable.

I love KRS, but did he have the technical ability of an Eminem, a Pun, a Big L...absolutely not.

It's only one aspect of what makes an artist great, I respect that, I'm not saying it's the most important either, that is opinion too. It's also only one aspect of lyricism...I think people mistake lyricism for technical skill, for me great lyricism also includes great story telling, writing in a way that connects emotionally with the listener...which is why I consider Pac a top lyricist, but not a top technical rapper. Which is also why I didn't say best lyricist in this title as that would not be my opinion.

In no order my top 5 would be

Black Thought
Pharoahe Monch
Eminem
Gift of Gab
Rakim

I was never a huge fan of Big L. He was ahead of his time style wise, I agree, but idk about cracking into elite status. I just don't see it.

When it comes to Em, I think technically he is better than he has ever been...his wordplay in particular is incredibly subtle. I think he lacks in other aspects he didn't used to lack in...maybe that's age, maybe that's not being in the inner circle of hip hop anymore, idk..i still admire him as a writer. He's incredible.
