Didn't even mind the guitar player jerking off during this one

I really dislike that song. The middle of the album was all over the map, but the first six and last four tracks were good.

It's the worst De La Soul album, which still makes a 6.5-7.

Personally, I liked how it felt like they were stretching themselves rather than sticking to a general vibe. To me, albums like that get stale after awhile but I do love when music at least attempts to challenge it's listeners. I'll probably listen to this more than their other albums

De La Soul stretch themselves more than just about any other rap group, always. The only possible exception is Stakes Is High, which is a straight-forward rap album (and great in that mold).

3 Feet High & Rising is famous for its innovations. De La Soul Is Dead is one of the least traditional rap albums ever. Both AOI albums are weird and futuristic (though Bionix is clearly better than Mosaic Thump). The Grind Date really pushes into a lot of unique musical places.

Can't speak for lyrics cause I know nothing about that, but most of that musical stretching really feels superficial. Aside from bionix the form of most songs just stays the same. It's really a product of the times but especially in the earlier part of their career the songs very cookie-cutter (and there's nothing wrong with that, I love De la soul is dead)

I just like seeing the actual structure of songs being experimented with - making an enjoyable song in the process is a huge challenge considering you're intentionally disorienting your audience and I think they did pretty well here

Excuse my laziness for not reading this thread in its entirety, but didn't these cats crowd fund this lp?

Which songs on this album really contain unique song structures? "Drawn" and "Sexy Bitch" and ...

"Lord Intended" and "Snoopies" grated to me because the hooks and verses felt so detatched.
