Was heavy metal until I heard Biggie & Pac-
It really thickened the pot, went from listening to kicking these rocks-
Shifting my spot, from meaningless noise to rap that twisted my knot-
Like I should give it a shot, support music that only had a great few-
Let the hate spew, from parents so it was EM whom I can relate to-
After that I realized I needed to be studying the culture-
Learned record labels can't be trusted, every ones a vulture-
Ready to assault ya, and really split the team in half-
Like the Terror Squad thats why Fat Joe was leaning back-
Jay-Z & beanie Mac, NWA & DMX plus how he fiend for crack-
Mase started preachin' while Diddy couldn't keep it rap-
But they speak the crap, While real rappers have no need for that-
Put real MC's in sleeping bags while new MC's keep it drag!-
Shit just peep the mags, lil pump, lil yahty and lil xan-
forget Big Pun, Big L & Biggie but don't realize they the lil'man!-
It went from real lyrics to shit no one even understands-
It's a gimmick with colored hair, singles in rubber bands-
One hit wonders not expecting shit when the thunder lands!-
Most likely started off with money from ya mother's hands-
Pink & blue dreads? Theres a spaceship to take you the mother land!
In 2 years I bet you fakes wont be able to fuckin' cover bands-
With Ice Cube & Ice Tea, Snoop Dogg is prolly' buggin'out-
New age bitch rappers thinking EM & JA need to hug it out-
Don't know the underground like Ill Bill & Necro being gory as hell-
They never heard of Slick Rick even tho he had a story to tell-
How do these pilled out kids think they really a part of rap-
Any day now KRS-1 is gonna have a fuckin' heart attack-
Went from real G's to dudes wearing dress's, Kanye thanks for that-
Your part of the reason kids nowadays think Drake is gangsta rap!-
What about Mob deep and making Queens a legend-
Illmatic is Stillmatic so NAS still needs a mention-
So whos next jay cole or kendrick lamar-
They need to re read this before setting the bar-
The lesson is hard, Respect ya elders before ya left in the dark-
Every 90's rap I bet I can relate and actually name that-
But I'm blinded by the pink hair and the stupid face tats-
Hip hop is dying & we really need to change that.....

Press play.

Let the record play, let it take me away.

.
Don’t you miss those days when music made you feel a way
When the beat got under your skin and wouldn’t wash for days?
That feeling of nostalgia like you’ve know it for years
As the lyrics played over and over in your ears.

Origins

Before the culture took on popularity and become a machine
It was an idea first, and idea of the hapless against the regime.
A rebels cry in the darkness of the night, a harbinger of light
Seeking truth where there was no truth to be found.
Giving a voice to the voices that had no sound.
A pure movement of necessary footsteps for the times,
Towards catching the ears of the ignorants mind.
Pointing a finger at the very moments most shy away from.
Hoping understanding is the product of listening’ outcome.

The plight of the helpless and those with nothing to lose
Stitched in each snare, tethered to each notes blues.
A reflection of the times, the music was much more
Than a flash in the pan or a catchy score.
When it meant something to feel the pain of life
And you thought you couldn’t handle more strife,
That song brought you back from the darkness
And the light shined just a little more bright.

Though Innovators of an art, you felt you could relate
From their studio to your radio and intern to your mixtape.
I miss the days when music felt like something I understood
I always found a feeling in every record I grooved.
No matter the type of genre I always found my truth.
But these days I find my self lost in today’s youth
The music is different and I don’t understand its roots.

..I remember my pops giving me the same clues.
