By far my favorite rapper. I own an original pressing of Infinite on vinyl. The dark colored one. Not that lightly colored reprint. I can recite whole albums. If I had the opportunity to have a sit down conversation with a celebrity it would be Em. I won’t argue with you about who’s better, but I doubt you’re changing my opinion.
I know there are fans of every artist who will blindly follow whatever they do/say. That’s when fandom gets weird.
Seen the Stan joke used about 12 times in the other thread so here. Just let it all out in here.

I used to be an Eminem fan, until he started doing that weird accent shit on the album with the song "rain man," on it. He lost me forever after that.
I'm tuning in to this back and forth though. Of course Eminem is the better lyricist of the two. But the shots being fired from both just makes for a great bit of entertainment.
Is Eminem the best to y’all cuz it’s most relatable and was released at a time in your life where you was quite impressionable ?
Cuz he def not the best rapper alive today

I liked him when I was a preteen cus swearing and being oddly violent was kewl xD
After the only people that vibed with him I knew were poor white dudes, same people that started bumping mgk when he came up
I don’t disrespect his legacy in terms of talent and clout. He did his thing and did it well. As a technical rhymer was he top 5 at his time? Yes. Did he influence some of today’s beat rhymers? Yes. Is he now technically still the best? No.
He is an all time great but so we’re atheltes that would get fucking destroyed by new age atheltes. Time = progression.
I’m curious is dull boy is a Stan because of nostalgia, his technical prowess, and/or the content of his music/story.
There isn't a lyricist who can match EM's pen game. And I'm not even a EM fan like that.
As far as song making. He's definitely not the best. Majority do it better.
But when it comes to the pen. I don't see anyone better.

I like Hip Hop.
Naughty by Nature, Mobb Deep, Wu, Redman
LL, Pac, Big, Snoop, Pun, Nas and on and on and on.
I feel like Mos Def's Black on Both Sides is my favorite Hip Hop album.
Rawkus led to Def Jux led to Rhyme Sayers.
The way Em represents lyricism and respects Hip Hop is part of why he's my favorite.
MGK is right. He's a 'dweeb'. Word nerd. Fucking Hip hop historian.
The way Em writes is why I like him. Delivery wise not many are on his level, either.
While I can vibe out to The Chronic,
I'm not going to be sitting there picking the bars apart.
Because there just isn't the same amount of depth.
Kendrick is really dope. I haven't listened to much Cole,
because I don't like the sing song shit. Same with Drake.
Em is white and a fucking nerd. So obviously he's more relatable.

Because of his delivery. His ability to rhyme relevant multiple syllables, stay in the scheme and incorporate clever wordplay into those lines in a way that works both ways.
Other talented writers have trouble doing that type of thing even a little bit. I know how difficult it is because I've spent 20 years writing rhymes, and I don't have to worry about delivering them over a beat.

KOD
Lyrics aren’t shit if the content is trash. Kamikaze was a good listen but aside from the Joyner track it has no replay value. Bunch of wordplays that have been done to death by textcees which were a result of him and disses that don’t serve a purpose beyond the initial shock value. All those Eminem show style Eminem singing on the hook songs on this were garbage.

Big Pun was a better wordsmith than him during their time.
Kendrick - Definitely not. Joyner - Definitely not. JID - Who is this? Cole - Maybe but also sucks at making music as well.

Also, you can't just single out multis or wordplay, EM does it all. Flow, Schemes, Punches, Wordplay, Humor, Witty, Creative, etc...
TO ME, none of these new aged cats are seeing him as far as lyricism. They just make better music, I guess. Hard to explain because to me it doesn't even make sense.

I'm on track 5 (ATM) and so far this album is straight forward, simple schemed, basic knowledge writing. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm saying that in terms of lyricism nothing has been better lyrically than Kamikaze.
Fuck. Feel Me Flow by Naughty By Nature is better than this album in terms of lyricism, and that shit was a summer anthem single from like '93 or '94.
Em's technical prowess in terms of how he schemes things, words things and incorporates humor is on some genius, idiot savant type shit.
It sucks that the dude became the biggest pop act in the whole fucking world, because Infinite and SSEP showed how crazy he was with that part of rapping and writing.
I really think there's a gap between people who really appreciate what the guy does and those who know him as a popular, controversial rapper.

After you said KOD was better lyrically you kind of lost all credibility, with me.
You're obviously free to form your own opinion. I just think you're missing something.
Em's lyrics are overflowing with allusory statements. He references certain classic Hip Hop, not just for the fuck of it, but because it has relevance in what he's talking about. He does the same shit in disses.
Em takes issue with MGK saying pedophilia type shit towards his daughter. So he says, "you already know who you are, Kelly."
Just that one line. It's clever. It's on point. The way he uses, 'already' as a rhyme for, 'are, Kelly.' All of this shit adds up and it never really ends. This is just one sliver of an example.
It's overly complex. He's teaching string theory to 6th graders.
If 2 syllable end rhymes are considered multis & lol @ moms spaghetti.

Respecting someone's talent isn't having their dick in your mouth. Think I don't know being in this thread defending Eminem is unpopular? Think I'm doing it because I'm in love with him, or some other reason? Hmmmmmmm
It's not wild. It's pertinent. Relevant. The already/are, Kelly part isn't mind blowing, either. It's just one example of how you can subtly make a line/rhyme better by adding assonance or internal schemes.
Most of us here have been doing this for a while. No one is coming up with much that's refreshing or new in the world of wordplay. Current events is the best way to seem fresh. When a dude named Machine Gun Kelly talks about your 13 year old being hot, then as a rapper it's easy to make the connection. It's the way he uses it. It's subtle. It's relevant. He adds other elements to make the rhyme/line flow and sound better.
Like I said. One example. Point is... I looked at 5 Cole songs off that album you said was lyrically better than Kamikaze and none of it was even worth breaking down. It's all just straight forward rhyming. Take the first song off Kamikaze and you could teach a class on rhyme writing.

tbh kendrick is good and lyrical but to say his form of writing is more intricate or impressive than em isn't solid? what textcees do anything that em does? besides really good "rhymers" like neigh or db himself? i read a lot of battles here and nothing is really
impressive LYRICALLY. cool little wordplays and punches, but in theory that's tired and easy to do. if u think karaoke or cashijs are at the pinnacle of rhyming or anything of that nature u r clearly probably not the greatest writer. i haven't listened to end album and i probably won't even though I'm defending him here. cole is a good writer, but to say he's better lyrically is weird as fuck. i bump cole songs but better lyrically? song making and lyricism aren't the same lol. also literally almost nobody here is an amazing rhymer. I'm gewd friends with bagga but i don't hesitate to tell
him he sucks anytime i get. but i do understand he's considered cool and good, here. it's just silly saying eminem sucks. if he were on nc he'd be the people's champ prob and prob be pushed to go mainstream cause he'd be the best there or something retarded. em music generally sucks nowadays and u can't bump it on the car = doesn't equate to him not being good lyrically

what do you define lyrical as? I consider content that is thought provoking, relevant, and well delivered to be lyrical. I consider rhyme schemes that flow to a beat flawlessly and make you vibe with it to be lyrical.
I guess in some peoples eyes just making wordplays means you're lyrical?
Nothing else anyone has said Em does so well isn't replicated in any of the other music i've mentioned. to say KOD isn't lyrical is fucking retarded.
If you're asking who does what Eminem does (rhyming the very bestest by doing amazing things like using schemes that have the same syllables but not the same # of words! and using wordplays) better than I guess no one because it's his style and there's a reason no one listens to him anymore and his albums all sell worth shit?

I'd really like to avoid separating people into groups here, but it just seems like some people get it and some don't...
KOD's songs are easy to write. It's the production and delivery that make them entertaining. I'M NOT SAYING that it's bad. I'm just saying that if we're talking about lyricism, then
I know that it's difficult

I mean... seriously... I could write that in less than 5 minutes. Most people could. There's nothing technical about it.
That isn't to say that this sort of music doesn't have it's worth... but for ME PERSONALLY, I value technical ability. I've always felt like diving was a decent analogy for it. Anyone can jump off a diving board into the water. Some people can do a flip. Some people can get insanely intricate without belly flopping. SOME people can do all of that and barely make a splash. The more technical your writing gets, then the harder it is to not make a big ass splash.
Sometimes Em flops on a song, or a lyric, but I don't even agree with the fact that he isn't a good song writer. I just don't think he writes the kind of songs y'all like.
When I'm Gone is a good song.
Believe is a good song.
Untouchable is a good song.
Kim. Stan. 'Til I Collapse. Way I Am. Offended. In Your Head. Castle. Arose.
Those are all well written SONGS.
But hey... I like Eyedea, so. I'm not like most of y'all.

It’s not about Em not being great at a lot of technical things, it’s his content being so bad that nothing can save it. But yeah I guess you can maybe relate enough to his content to like it with the technical stuff too?
I’m not gonna go find lyrics of his that anyone could write in 5 minutes but there’s plenty of it. His jokes are childish and simple shock humor. His comedy talents are on par with Carlos mencia and the likes. His stories are for dirts and simpletons.

I can't find a good source for kamikaze other than spotify and don't have premium so can't pin point the track names other than fall and lucky you, but there's two off it that remind me of eminem show em and the content is about relationships
I don't find any of his songs about relationships listenable because he's a scumbag and child
Don't like when he gets political because he doesn't do so intelligently and makes it a sideshow
Don't find his stuff about the come up good because I never lived in a trailer park
And otherwise his flex tracks are hit and miss because he has such a bad style of humor to me. His comedy is like deleted scenes from the first 5 seasons of southpark. It's just shock value, low hanging fruit LETS BE OFFENSIVE garbage
Infinity and SSLP/MMLP are good and I like at least 70% of the music on them. Everything since is so inconsistent and frequently cringey that I can't even name a specific song for you because it's the entire flow of the album. Eminem show is what made me not like him. Politically it was more nonsense than immortal technique but better written.
this is his best effort in over a decade by far, it's just not a good all around album. lucky you is the best joint, rest is either listenable a few times for the hype or fluff.

Just mentioning that shit makes me cringe a little. The Horrorcore track is still dope, to me, and I think if I hadn't had my responsibilities as a father I could have honed things a bit more... but, ah well. Sometimes I fantasize in my head about recording some new shit. I feel like rappers are actors, though, and while acting isn't something I'd have an issue doing, there's something that feels disingenuous about doing it on a mic.

booth is 1000% correct in this thread.
him asking if you've made music wasn't a "i make music" standpoint, it was simply a question because anyone who actually understands the craft understands how difficult it is to be both complex, within the parameters of a flow thats fresh, while sitting within a beat perfectly.
eminem on the other hand is so skilled that you can see his shortcomings and spots where he either decides, fuck it, or forces his flow which in essence is also a fuck it. but all that said i completely understand what people enjoy in it.
we all listen to music for different reasons.
look at improvised jazz. or just alot of jazz in general, where all the musicians are going OFF with the most intricate shit. to me it sounds like pure fucking NONSENSE. but to the trained ear of a dude who plays piano, he's JIZZING on himself hearing someone go off like WTF this dudes the GOAT. meanwhile it does nothing for me. i'd rather listen to some smooth soul from the same era, that is ridiculously simple, just simple chord progressions, a rhythm guitar stabbing in on the snare etc.
its pleasing musically.

also i'm the wrong person to talk to when we're speaking about people relevant in hip hop in 2018.
i like that AZ was brought up though, but obviously "the format" should be used to display his lyricism. he's probably my favorite when he is 100 percent on point. he's never WACK. but he can be as average as any other "good" lyricist. the sad part is he is pretty average as far as good lyricists in hip hop go the majority of the time. but when he is on point its hard to compete.
but again there are different types of lyricism. i only like the mention of AZ with EM because they both tend to go crazy with schemes of multis while working in inner rhymes, and even rhyming entire bars for periods of time.
but then you have the black thought's of the world, who doesn't get AS complex as them, but his content of his bars is far beyond their shit WHILE still being complex enough to be masterful
and then you got guys like jay electronica who on the surface is NOWHERE NEAR them, from a complexity standpoint, but he is as good of a lyricist as they come. no ones writing like him.
thats just a few examples, its way too complex to really break down. but again i can't seperate the rapper from the music, thats why i can look at jay electronica in the same category as them without blinking an eye, while from your guys standpoint thats just silly.
but the problem comes in, that i completely understand your guys' viewpoint, and why you form your opinion the way you do, but you don't understand mine. its from a place of ignorance, whether self imposed or not. you either never wanted to see the skill in them or just never bothered to. im probably spoiled from my foray into pretending to be a beatmaker and being exposed to so many different styles you gain a different appreciation of how artists attack beats.

I actually think Az is better at rhyming then eminem tbh. Em has alot of corny stuff he uses to rhyme. Crap, poop and stuff like that & some of the most predictable multis. I generally think AZ on point is a better lyricist in rhyming depo. Always thought GZA the genius was a hell of a lyricist as well, Killah priest & Ghostface too

Memes are rarely nuanced. They remind me of Idiocracy. I’m sitting on my couch genuinely thinking how only real writers who write in scheme heavy styles understand how good Em is.
Saw this fella boof talking about how it’s meaningless multiple syllable rhymes. Dude on the car rapping spoof insinuates the same sentiment. Budden claimed Em’s just rhymed a bunch of words the last decade.
That view point exposes one or many of multiple reasons why those people don’t get it.
I know most of you have never heard of Dos Noun or his album Paper Animals, but it’s one of the best multi syllable rhyming album I’ve ever heard. It sounds like shit. He has a cardboard flow and monotone delivery. As music in terms of musicality, it’s complete garbage, but from a lyrical standpoint it’s incredible. Eminem has incorporated so many things into his style, that only makes the way he schemes that much more impressive.
Tldr: Em’s a legend and no one can match his lyrical ability.

Let me explain just how to make greatness
Straight out the gate, I'm 'bout to break you down
Ain't no mistakes allowed, but make no mistake, I'm 'bout
To rape the alphabet, I may raise some brows
If I press the issue just to get the anger out (brrr)
Full magazine could take staples out

But bitch, I'm off the chain like Kala Brown
Motherfucker, shut the fuck up when I'm talkin', lil' bitch
I'm sorry, wait, what's your talent? Oh, critiquin'
My talent? Oh, bitch, I don't know who the fuck y'all are
To give a sub-par bar, even have an opinion of you

Maybe, "Stan" just isn't your cup of tea
Maybe, your cup's full of syrup and lean
Maybe, I need to stir up shit, preferably
Shake the world up if it were up to me
Paul wants me to chill, y'all want me to ill
I should eat a pill, probably I will
Old me kill the new me, watch him bleed to death
I breathe on the mirror, I don't see my breath
Possibly, I'm dead, I must be possessed
Like an evil spell, I'm E-V-I-L (evil, spelled)
Jam a Crest Whitestrip in the tip of my dick
With an ice pick, stick it in a vice grip
Hang it on a spike fence, bang it with a pipe wrench
While I take my ballsack and flick it like a light switch
Like vice-president Mike Pence back up on my shit in a sidekick
As I lay it on a spike strip
These are things that I'd rather do than hear you on a mic, since
Nine tenths of your rhyme is about ice, and
Jesus Christ, man, how many times is
Someone gonna fuck on my bitch? (Fuck my side chick)
You won't ever see Em icy
But as cold as I get on the M-I-C
I polarize shit, so the Thames might freeze
And your skull might split, like I passed you upside it
Bitch I got the club on smash like a nightstick (yeah)
Turn down for what? I ain't loud enough
Nah, turn the Valium up
'Cause I don't know how I'm gonna get your mouths to shut
Now when it doesn't matter what caliber I spit at
I'll bet a hundred thousand bucks
You'll turn around and just be like
"Man, how the fuck sourpuss gonna get mad just 'cause his album sucks?
And now he wants to take it out on us." (ooh-ooh)
But last week, an ex-fan mailed me a copy
Of The Mathers LP to tell me to study
It'll help me get back to myself and she'll love me (ooh-ooh)
I mailed the bitch back and said if I did that
I'd just be like everyone else in the fucking industry
Especially an effing Recovery clone of me
So finger-bang, chicken wang, MGK, Iggy 'zae
Lil Pump, Lil Xan imitate Lil Wayne
I should aim at everybody in the game, pick a name
I'm fed up with being humble
And rumor is I'm hungry, I'm sure you heard bumblings
I heard you wanna rumble like an empty stomach
I heard your mumblin' but it's jumbled in mumbo-jumbo
The era that I'm from will pummel you
That's what it's comin' to
What the fuck are you gonna do? Where you runnin' to?
I'm gonna crumble you and I'll take a number two
And dump on you if you ain't Joyner
If you ain't Kendrick or Cole or Sean, then you're a goner
I'm 'bout to bring it to anyone in this bitch who want it
I guess when you walk into BK you expect a Whopper
You can order a Quarter Pounder when you go to McDonald's
But if you're lookin' to get a porterhouse you better go get Revival
But y'all are acting like I tried to serve you up a slider
Maybe the vocals should have been auto-tuned
And you would have bought it
But sayin' I no longer got it
'Cause you missed the line and never caught it
'Cause it went over your head, because you're too stupid to get it
'Cause you're mentally retarded, but pretend to be the smartest
With your expertise and knowledge, but you'll never be an artist
And I'm harder on myself than you could ever be regardless
What I'll never be is flawless, all I ever be is honest
Even when I'm gone they're gonna say I brought it
Even when I hit my forties like a fuckin' alcoholic
With a bottle full of malt liquor
But I couldn't bottle this shit any longer
The fact that I know that I'ma hit my bottom
If I don't pull myself from the jaws of defeat and rise to my feet
I don't see why y'all even started with me
I get impeached, my enemies die
I don't cease fire till at least all are deceased
I'm eastside, never be caught slippin'
Now you see why I don't sleep
Not even a wink, I don't blink
I don't doze off, I don't even nod to the beats
I don't even close my fuckin' eyes when I sneeze
"Aw, man, that BET cypher was weak, it was garbage
The Thing ain't even orange, oh my God, that's a reach"
Shout to all my colorblind people, each and every one of y'all
If you call a fire engine green, aquamarine
Or you think water is pink
"Dawg, that's a date," "Looks like an olive to me."
"Look, there's an apple!" "No it's not, it's a peach!"
So finger-bang, Pootie Tang
Burger King, Gucci Gang, dookie, dang
Charlamagne gonna hate anyway
Doesn't matter what I say
Give me Donkey of the Day
What a way for 2018 to get underway
But I'm gonna say everything that I wanna say
Welcome to the slaughterhouse, bitch (yeah)
Invite them in like a One A Day
I'm not done (preach)
'Cause I feel like the Beast of Burden
That line in the sand, was it even worth it?
'Cause the way I see people turnin'
Is makin' it seem worthless
It's startin' to defeat the purpose
I'm watchin' my fan base shrink to thirds
And I was just tryin' to do the right thing, but word
Has the court of public opinion reached a verdict
Or still yet to be determined?
'Cause I'm determined to be me, critique the worship
But if I could go back I'd at least reword it
And say I empathize with the people this evil serpent
Sold the dream to that he's deserted
But I think it's workin'
These verses are makin' him a wee bit nervous
And he's too scurred to answer me with words
'Cause he knows that he will lyrically get murdered
But I know at least he's heard it
'Cause Agent Orange just sent the Secret Service
To meet in person to see if I really think of hurtin' him
Or ask if I'm linked to terrorists
I said, "Only when it comes to ink and lyricists."
But my beef is more media journalists
(Hold up, hold up, hold up)
I said my beef is more meaty, a journalist
Can get a mouthful of flesh
And yes, I mean eating a penis
'Cause they been pannin' my album to death
So I been givin' the media fingers
Don't wanna turn this to a counselling sesh
But they been puttin' me through the ringer
So I ain't ironin' shit out with the press
But I just took this beat to the cleaners
first 20 bars read like a finny verse tbh
also "while i take my ballsack and flick it like a light switch" is the worst line ever & that whole color blind section is retarded
id quote all the cringey parts but it'd take too long

Everything he’s saying is a coherent thought, and many of the stanzas build narratives relevant to what he’s trying to get across. It doesn’t get any less ‘just rhyming words’ than that lol
I saw some review trashing Not Alike because he used the flow from that Cash Me Ouside girl’s track. The whole point of the track is how dumb new music is. It’s why he’s saying random, meaningless shit that rhymes as the chorus.
When Em said, ‘New Kids on the Block sucked a lot of dick. Boy girl groups make me sick...’ Nobody was accusing him of stealing LFO’s melody, because that was the fucking point lol

Is it Canibus talking about planets aligning and energy fields? With a crazy fucking flow and delivery, he’s spitting constant multiple syllable rhymes, and what he’s saying content wise is pretty straight forward. The audio/Audi, yo/adios shit is just dope penmanship.
I can see why people like Lil Yachty, but not me though
Not even dissin', it just ain't for me
All I am simply is just an MC
Maybe, "Stan" just isn't your cup of tea
Maybe, your cup's full of syrup and lean
Here he comes out and says what he’s been saying about stupid ass music since he came out. Em did turn into a label owner and business commodity. Em went from underground, antiestablishment on his first 3-4 records, to being the establishment. Relapse is full of references to struggling with that concept. He was sloppy on that album. MMLP2 he really started refining the style he has now. Wordplay heavy with insane schemes and flow. I remember reading somewhere that after the hiatus between Encore and Relapse that he had to reteach himself how to write. The last track of Relapse is Underground and the narrative was, ‘this record sucks, except for Underground.’ Relapse is a guilty pleasure because he’s just spazzing the fuck out on schemes and weird shit. Recovery is like your fun uncle who grew up. The wordplay on there is the worst. MMLP2 is fucking dope. Revival is fucking dope and Kamikaze is Em back to being antiestablishment and unapologetic. I hope he keeps the throttle to the floor in this direction. It’s almost back where he started, only now he’s being unabashedly lyrically complex... over trap beats with modern cadences. It’s scathing criticism hidden in (apparently subtle) satire.
Maybe ‘Stan’ just isn’t your cup of tea
Maybe your cup’s full’a syrup and lean.
Old me killed the new me, watch him bleed to death
I breathe on the mirror, I don't see my breath
Possibly, I'm dead, I must be possessed
Like an evil spell, I'm E-V-I-L
Just rhyme like an evil spell with the spelling of evil. How is that JUST rhyming words? The meaning behind the line ties into the rest of the stanza topically and it’s lyrcism at its purest.
If you understand it then I can’t explain it.
Just relistened to mmlp. This will not be repeated in our life time where we will appreciate it. No one our age (24 to 38 I'd say) can deny this album it's credit. The lyrics for its era are just unmatched. Sad. He should have stopped after recovery.
