Good morning,

I have my first competition in one months time. I am both nervous and excited. Any tips or recommendations or strategies?

Also, I am a two stripe white belt. I can tap other white belts and sometimes survive against blue belts. If you were me what should I focus on in my game?

Still planning to come to an open mat in Charleston this summer hombre.

Thank you in advance.

Yes.

And also the reverse, like oh man this guy could do that to me right now. Pretty humbling.

Good question Jim.

How are you able to compete already? Don't you have to have a year of training under your belt before you can begin competing?

Pretty sure your gym can register you if they think you’re ready

Or licensed coach

NAGA? New Breed? IBJJF?

Your adrenaline is going to dump and you're going to feel sick. It gets better the more you do it. Don't cut weight for a shitty white belt tournament. I don't know anything about your game so I can't advise from here. Pull guard if your standup sucks and you're allowed to pull guard (IBJJF doesn't let white belts do it anymore).

It'll be over quick. Try to shut everything out and treat it like a free roll.

Remember that winning or losing doesn't matter, especially at this level. Just have fun. If you can't have fun, competing isn't for you, and that's okay. Plenty of BJJ legends haven't or don't compete.

I don’t know tbh. My coach told me about a tourney and said I should register. It is just white belts. Am I ready? I have no idea, but only one way to find out. I am nervous amd excited.

Word. That's interesting.

veritas - shake the nerves, man. That can be your ultimate demise in the end. Confidence is key. Remember the game of chess, predict his every and next move and counter. Being a psychologist and all, you shouldn't have an issue doing that, lol. Don't be overly aggressive on offense but ensure your defense is on point.

It will be an experience you won't ever forget. the 1st competition is always the best. And if you win, it'll be embedded on your ego.

no win at white belt should be embedded on anyone's ego, ever.

My only nerves really are about letting my squad down. But I can’t harp on that.

The competition is what will be embedded, the 1st comp is always memorable.

And doesn't matter what belt - a win is a win. And he will feel a lot better as the victor then he will as a the loser, that's for sure.

Winning is like a drug.

EDIT:
veritas - worry about you and not your squad. You don't want to let yourself down, not them.

I've been in over 6 amateur boxing tournaments, I will tell you this. Don't over think it, treat it like a spar. Since you're grappling? get 3 moves for each position as your go to. It will make your anxiety on your first go around easier to handle. 3 for standing, 3 for top, 3 from bottom.

Have fun enjoy it, learn what you can do better after you take an honest assessment of how you faired.

GOODLUCK!! veritas, just enjoy yourself =)
