Yo, we’re still here with just 2 no shows and some high level sign-ins. Good shit to everyone here. First things first:

For the sake of convenience and getting battles up in time, if you’re submitting a verse by pm, send it to bleak. He’s handling the day-to-day shit and all I really focus on is the mag.

I said it in chat already, but I truly appreciate the voting in the battles. Shit was able to close by Saturday and I can save my thoughts for this mag. You all are making this shit run well. Time to do our part...

[Sharp]

Infiltrate vs Nigma (NS)

Inf drops early and has a decent verse no showed. Luckily we can highlight it here in the no show shine.

King Karaoke vs Plot (NS)

Plot no-shows due to lack of motivation. <- Believe it or not, my phone keyboard is so used to typing that sentence it auto-completed it for me. This time, the excuse was Australia day, which I didn't realize was a week long holiday. I also understand how a reminder that you live in Australia would drive you to drink. Karaoke signs out into the sunset with his win built on numbers.

Flow vs Killing Spree (pics)

The reason for an incredibly condescending how-to in this week’s mag. Props to these guys for going pics and changing shit up. KS used things in Flow’s pic decently but wasn’t totally direct with Flow and really lacked the harsh wording to do much damage. Flow was definitely better. The black mass and Smart Water bars were, to me, his best. They were well worded and really direct disses. Good to see we have the potential for a pic battle here, but KS would probably do better with a reg battle next - haven’t seen him pic battle much - to bring that record back up. Between this and the Hot or Thot tourney, Flow’s establishing himself as a double threat.

Resin M-I-C vs Jabari Black

These two brought 16 lines of flames each in what was widely seen as our Battle of the Week. Looking at the quotes you get the story of the battle. Jabari had some heat with his gun bars and that home team line, but Resin had so many angles on JB that those 16 really felt fresh the whole way through. Only line I found to fall flat was his closer. His kickback, blackboard, and Blackbox were killer. Jabari’s Cynthia and floss lines were quality, but ultimately he wasn’t as consistent as Resin, who gets the Verse of the Week nod.

Allen Knight vs bleak

This was cool. AK seemed to be running out of steam by the end but did enough to take it. His verse started strong and personal as all hell. Allen's first 6 probably won the battle for him, with the voters really responding to all of them, though that Ortega line was your classic AK. Despite all the flack I know he catches, I respect that bleak is carving out his own style. I think it can be effective to have a punch thrown in a different way, unique to you, but not when you're using ‘night’ bars against Allen Knight. The bong bar was a great example of how bleak can be a threat. Looking forward to seeing what he does next.

BodySnatcher vs Ryno [/B]

This was dope, on top of the bars, these guys posted the day after the battle went up and had higher quality than half the verses put up this week. Body just had tighter concepts going for him. Around the Horn and desert eagle were personal enough and Chivalry was fucking hot. Ryno’s powerbomb line was solid and the best-received by voters. I liked the date with death idea but it missed something in the wording… awkward in silence? Still, quality bars from both, but Body just had more of them.

Sinacog vs Objective

This was a strange one. I picked Objective to win, but Sinacog was way closer than I gave him credit for. He had much stronger concepts than Objective. Objective just had better execution. His bars were okay, but what set him apart from Sinacog was that his wordplay and disses were given enough focus to develop. Longbar has grown on me, but when the rhyme is the focus, imo, it hugely detracts from the bar. Sinacog could be a threat in swag and flow, but Objective edges with slightly harder wording.

Exis vs Innovator

This one went about how we thought it might. Exis was all over the place, but got a few shots in, while Innovator pretty much took the same predictable angle for the entire verse. Luckily for Inno, it was the first big battle Exis has had so no one could say it was played out. I don't want to downplay Inno's verse either. He actually had some creative takes, my favorite being the DMX bar. Now he moves on to tougher competition.

Incredible vs Zelph

Man, Zelph went off here. I got the feeling from that Mr. Incredible line that he’d been saving some bars for this matchup and his generics were just as solid. I have a preference for personals so the Monsters Inc and Mr. Incredible were my standouts, though that boba tea was something I wouldn’t have thought of in a million years. Nice. Incredible wasn’t too great here. Despite a solid last 4 and good economy of language, but it made some of his bars harder to understand. Honestly, I enjoyed the closer, but there was something missing from just about every line. I could see Incredible improving over time, especially since he had some decent feedback.

Cred vs DMS

I didn't give DMS enough credit, but Cred was on his usual shit and tough to match for that app download bar. The rest of Cred’s verse read like he posted the first concepts to come to mind exactly as worded. DMS could have snuck out a win, and even got a vote, but he just had some odd wording. The main complaint I have is in the bar construction. Between the unnecessary quotes and wording things around making them rhyme, he didn’t have enough to really hit. I know DMS has signed out to fully focus on his quest for the full, catch-all bar formula, but I hope to see him back again giving more thought to concepts. Cred’s gonna need to step his game up against the higher-level crowd, but he knows that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKTlRN3jLfw

Qualm vs DynamiCz

This was dope, and for some, BOTW. Kind of marred by Qualm referring to himself as Aero in his verse, then posting about not being Aero in chat with the battle still open. Save that shit for its close. DynamiCz brought heat. I had to reread his friendship tattoo line since I was surprised to see an ‘Aero/arrow’ name flip hit. The car bars were solid as well and he had an all-around quality verse. Qualm wasn't bad either. I'm honestly surprised he didn't get a vote, even the Aero, DynamiCz bar was done well. The main complaint from voters was in the execution of a few concepts, but he hit pretty hard. Most votes had Dy taking it by a single punch. Dope battle, guys.

[No-Show Shine]

Infiltrate vs Nigma

Fuck it

Nigs topics r trash, thinks they genius but we'd call it dumb
His best ideas hit walls & get shutdown w/o votes like dems stalling trump
In Winter Topical u were so wack ur opponents felt bad mate
Couldn't talk dat shit to Deadman. psychic mediums helped u meet halfway
I'm snapping bones one by one...dog, u've gotta permit to die
W/both feet in, wont ease up breakin in every place like first learning to drive
Word to the wise i'll creep in disguise so these bullets fire promptly
Cuz for 'a Nig 'Matic' will be the status when detectives try to find the body
Girl saw what I was workin with, we danced then bodies entwined
It's sumo - she wanted my 'dong first & I put a footdown'...things got outta line
Whole crew get cement shoes, only their screams left in low places
Maaan ur Cetacean bottom of the ocean so deep dolphins needed echo location
You came from RB & transplanted on the Lime like a court order..
Said "NC is one of Mahomes away from home'? This the Pats in the 4th quarter

Shame this was NS, but Nigma would’ve had a hard time topping this. The opener was solid, Dead man was basic, but since he’s rarely brought up in battles, it hits. That learning to drive bar is fucking dope. Worded well, universally understandable, and encompassed by that feeling of ‘shit, I wish I thought of that’. ‘A nig ‘matic’’ was a stretch for me. Sumo was funny and worded well enough to hit. Cetacean is a word that I have never heard before, so I had to google it, and it is apparently pronounced more like ‘crustacean’ so it doesn’t really work the way it should. And Mahomes is solid.

Basically, good shit Inf. You could’ve posted numbers and saved those bars, but instead you dropped heat and established yourself as a threat. And still, for some reason, edited your post two days after dropping.

[Interview with Knucklehead]
[bleak]

Sup Knuck, we are all looking forward to more podcasts. What plans do you have moving forward and WHEN can we expect them to be fulfilled?

I will make sure we do one before Beat Blue Bayou Season 1, Episode 1 (First Blood).

Hoping to get some of the NBL mag heads on, but it will be different now that JD had a falling out behind the scenes. Jabari Black and Amen will be there though.

HOF seems to have eluded you for yet another year somehow. Do you think it is your label as a troll or juat bias against a late run in your career?

It is a bit of both, tbrr. It's why Lars hasn't been put in either, and why Beyond took so long to get in too. It's general bias, if the "elite" don't think you match them as an equal because of their ego and love for patting each other on the back. It's hard for them to accept being in a grouping based on skill with someone that has such a reputation in the disc, AND it's hard for them to deal with the fact their era isn't the only one in existence. Unfortunately I rub people the wrong way for one or the other, often both.

What battles are you looking forward to this week? What battles did you enjoy reading last week?

I didn't read last week other than skimming JB vs. Resin. Allen vs. Body will be DOPE this week. Blue and Suth can be good, depends how rusty Suth is, some people can hop right back in and others can't.

What sites did you even come from? I like to believe you were raised inside of the archives but that can't be true. Explain Scheinberg briefly while you're at it.

I came from RapForums.com in 2005. Black Disciple (dead man) and I grew up in these threads together, both of our homesite. Then I cycled a string of sites made by two brothers from Canada named Ock. and 4o0z. They had cross over with some RB dudes and a lot long bar heads from a community called HipHopEmcees (where Beyond gained his early textcee fame and where $ho Money aka GAMBLE was one of the top dawds). They always got hacked by other sites or got reported for having stolen vBulletin licenses so made a new site every 4-6 months.

Scheinberg was created around 2011 when I thought I discovered a family secret after visiting my grandmother after doing dabs for the first time while we played Scrabble. I thought we had jewish ancestry that was toasted in the ovens, but it turns out her mother remarried someone who was a jewish refugee, so no blood. I made a thread about it before discovering the truth and the site just kind of held on to it as a personal. I do this ish for the culture so was like eh, okay I guess. So I made up the name Scheinberg cus it went well with Seth and started using google translate to say yiddish things to Amen and Hush.

Marry Fuck Kill
Lars/KK/Nick James

The year is 2027, Lars has just lost his 7th job for making gore porn reviews in the managers office while he's on lunch. His wife left months ago. He finally decides it's time to go somewhere that will accept him, so on a plane he hops.. headed to NYC.

"LOLZZZ IN NYC NOW COME DROP ADDRESSES ITT" he submits, only receiving a response from now HOF Textcee Nick James. His success has brought him great wealth now that currency is all based on internet clout, and as Lars arrives to his mansion he drops his head low.. literally shaking bros. He should've been in the HOF, this should have been his life..

I'll spare the details, but his self hatred and lack of direction in a new world lead to 6 months of snorting lines of meth off of Nick James dick. His visiting VISA is about to expire, so he does what he must and gets married to the yung killa. He's just one of a dozen brides of Nick, but he felt special that day. Maybe it'll work out, maybe this is it.. Flo real drives all the way up from Philly to be the Maid of Dishonor, and they just laugh the night away.

But it wasn't what he had hoped. Deep down, he knew it wouldn't end well. I mean, he married Nick James as part of a community marriage on a meth riddled ranch in the ruins of Brooklyn. How was he supposed to know it wasn't a mansion, it was a castle where he grew up. It's now 2031. He goes into Far Rock to buy some grapes. Ah man, is that Karaoke?! He knows it is, he's seen him in the pictures Knucklehead received from a hacked FBI database back in 2014!

They talk for a bit, just shooting the shit.. And then Kar says, "damn shame we never made the cut. we deserved it man. we worked for it. that fucking piece of shit SCHEINBERG made us guilty by association. No one could make it in as long as he was around, looming his manufactured accomplishments all about the boards. All riled up, Kar has to get out of here and invites Lars to his underground bungalow beneath the bridge.. This was the beginning, the beginning of the end..

After months of planning, Lars is ready. He's going to leave the ranch for good. He doesn't care if Karaoke is an awkward lover, he's special to him. He's his first. Finally someone waited, they waited for HIM damn it.

Nick James is no fool though. While Karaoke and Lars are making their escape, Nick meets them on the hill outside the ammunition bunker.

"Til death do us part, Ian."

Lars must do this on his own. BOOM. POW. KAZOOM. Lars stands above Nicks lifeless body. He whispers in Nicks ear, but Kar can't make out what he said.

It's our time now, Lars knows it to be true. They get on a boat and make their way down to Florida, to retire to Nick James secret bunker under his childhood trailer. Safe, away.. Quiet.

One day years later, celebrating the anniversary of when they eloped on the same hill where their love was bonded under the word of the Lord, suddenly Karaokes phone acts up as he's trying to take a photo of the view... asdad ... asd kasjd... 231dmasd...

Suddenly who appears on his screen?

"SCHEINBERGGGGG!"

Scheinberg laughs a hearty laugh, explaining to Karaoke how his final form came to be. He had transcended dimensions and become not a variable in the deepnet, but how he had become the deepnet itself. It all happened when bleak gave him parameters in an interview question in the Great Textpression, and he vowed that day to never be told he couldn't have his cake and eat it too.

Karaoke feels a sharp pain in his back. As he falls to the ground, he sees Lars standing over him. He removes his face to reveal he is nothing but an android underneath the flesh.

He leans down to whisper in his ear, but the words come from Karaokes phone which he fell next to..

"Fuck... Marry... Kill..."

Uh-Oh vs Veritas

Our first ‘real’ discussion matchup, Uh-Oh vs Veritas, has been a few weeks coming. They’ve been talking about it for awhile and there’s a few X-Factors that could swing this either way. How? We’ll see.

Warrior One: Uh-oh

WEAPONS AND ARMAMENTS:
-Pocket Pussy and Cleaner
-Spray Paint Gun
-Amazon Prime Subscription

-long range: 6
-mid range: 8
-short range: 3
-special: 5
-armor: 8

-speed: 4
-strength: 7
-agility: 2
-terrain knowledge: 10
-training: 0

Warrior Two: Veritas

WEAPONS AND ARMAMENTS:
-God’s Love
-Judo Whitebelt
-Lobster Bombs

-long range: 3
-mid range: 5
-short range: 8
-special: 10
-armor: 4

-speed: 5
-strength: 6
-agility: 4
-terrain knowledge: 10
-training: 5

To be quick, Uh-oh had an edge in long range since he had more he can throw. Lobsterbombs are long range, but not so powerful. As they got closer, though, V’s Jiu-Jitsu training gave him an edge and he became deadlier. We had to give V the special since God was probably in dude’s corner. Training was easy. V has his online doctorate and some martial arts shit while Uh-Oh’s pure instinct… that doesn’t work so well in this equation. I gave Uh-oh armor because he’s fatter… I assume. Terrain knowledge was easy since the two of them both have 13.5 million posts on this site. Both were lacking in agility since I can’t think of either one being too quick. The results:

https://i.imgur.com/HNAWMIy.jpg

Looks like V just had the edge on training, short range, and special (cuz God’s Love) and that was all it took in this simulation.

[Power Rankings]

1. Allen Knight
Nothing’s changed from last week only we know AK hasn’t lost a step. If he doesn’t lose motivation, he can beat anyone, and he had more than enough vs bleak last week.

2. Resin M-I-C
Won a BOTW with some heavy, universally enjoyed bars against one of the league’s best and is likely to reach the first contender round easily.

3. BodySnatcher
Nothing’s changed from last week aside from Body’s record, moving him 1 step closer to a contender match. He put up solid bars and took a dub from decent competition. Look out.

4. Infiltrate
Had a dope verse that was generally slept on since it wasn’t voted on. Don’t sleep on him.

[Previews]

Veritas (0-0) vs Cynic (0-0)

[Sharp]
This could be interesting. Cynic is someone who I don't think shows vs Veritas, who's a wildcard. V has his ‘double punch’ style he loves, but I think his execution ends up with two light jabs as opposed to one punch that really does damage. Similar to Sinacog above, only shorter, I would prefer to see one idea really developed rather than two just placed next to another. Maybe he'll change it up and do both. Maybe Cynic shows. Idk, but I'll take the guy who I know will post this week.

Veritas: 60/40

[bleak]
Wild Card battle here on both sides, for different reasons. These sign ins are always iffy but maybe he will bring some heat for Resident V. I look forward to seeing what V will bring to the table.

Veritas 70/30

Cred (1-0) vs. Infiltrate (1-0)

[Sharp]
Dope matchup with a different dynamic. Infiltrate is coming off of a NS win where he had bars. Cred is coming off of a split decision against DMS where he had… bar? Cred’s past record speaks for itself, but we haven’t seen Cred take on higher level competition here (no offense, DMS), which has led to Cred not dropping at that higher level. This could go to either one, but based on last week, I give Inf the edge. Cred at Super-Saiyan level 69,000 would do it, but I don’t believe anything til I see it.

Infiltrate: 55/45

[bleak]
Cred seemed unphazed by the matchup in front of him last week. DMS was a bit of an unknown and pulled a vote on a week 1 form that didn't highlight the strengths of the Chicago native. Cred has a lot more in the tank and he will need it here against Inf, who showed no signs of rust with his NS verse last week. GUN BARS VS VOCAB

Split 50/50

Allen Knight (1-0) vs. BodySnatcher (1-0)

[Sharp]
This one’s gonna be hard to call. Old vs New. Allen’s the perennial killer while Body’s the guy to beat of 2018. Now that it’s clearly established that BodySnatcher is not Nick James, the door to a lot of personals has been closed, but a window has been opened, and in this kind of unique situation, Allen reminds us that he’s clever as fuck. Body’s concepts against Ryno leaned heavily on name flips, which just don’t work as well on an established name like AK’s (pls no AK bars). I think I had the last quoted name play on Allen Knight in like 2014 (idgaf what you say AK my Al Green bar was dope), so this is a chunk of Body’s arsenal that’s less effective. If both show up as well as they can, this is BOTW. I see Allen as having the advantage because he just comes up with stronger concepts, but BodySnatcher is hungry and was going to have this battle sooner or later. He’s gotta be at least somewhat ready.

Allen Knight: 60/40

[bleak]
Allen showed up last week with a solid showing, he will need another when facing Body this week. This should be an interesting take on styles that may split voters down the middle. Big opportunity here for Body to pick up a big name in the win column.

Allen: 55/45

Innovator (1-0) vs. Resin M-I-C (1-0)

[Sharp]
God help you Inno, you’re up against someone who hasn’t sucked dog penis (that we know of). Resin is pretty much the opposite of Exis as competition in every way. Experienced, harsh wording, creative bars, and all of the obvious flips have been done enough to make them feel stale. This battle is Resin’s to lose, but I’m gonna look to see how Inno handles someone without the freebie personals. While I only see Inno winning by no-show, he has the power to make it a dope read. Resin will likely win on consistency and heat. FOR THE CULTURE, INNO.

Resin M-I-C: 90/10

[bleak]
Just keep at it Inno, same thing this week and you will pick up votes again. Resin may slack but not likely considering what he brought last week. It's your time Inno.

Resin.

Jabari Black (0-1) vs. Sinacog (0-1)

[Sharp]
This is something of a mismatch. I like these two in a battle, but Jabari outclasses Sinacog when it comes to execution. If Sinacog would focus on one concept per line, I could see potential for an upset, but Jabari should get the better of Sin through delivery and wording.

Jabari Black: 70/30

[bleak]
Jabari finds himself at 0-1 after a tough battle last week, and is now effectively a shark in a pool of goldfish. Sin knows how to rhyme but may need to focus on the other aspects of battle rap to succeed here. It's gotta be cohesive and flowing, you can't disconnect us with an unneeded tie in. I see JB taking this with his usual stuff, may post a little light against his matchup. This may hurt him but he should be ok.

JB: 80/20

Flow (1-0) vs. Wear Shhh (1-0)

[Sharp]
After last week, I'm actually not sure who I'd take. If Zelph's able to being the same heat he had against Incredible, Flow's got his work cut out for him. I haven't seen Flow do a reg battle in a minute and I'm sure Zelph knows that's where he has an advantage. I think this'll come down to misses. I'd be genuinely surprised if Flow could come up with a fresh lip play, but I'm anticipating him trying. Flow tends to err on the side of too goofy, and if he does, Zelph could easily punish him with a verse like last week’s. Could go either way, but based on last week Zelph has the edge.

Zelph: 55/45

[bleak]
Zelph had a solid showing, Flow caught a drunk KS with a decent verse in itself. We will all see where each rests after this battle, Zelph acting as a bit of a gatekeeper here. I got Flow in an “upset”

Flow 55/45

Killing Spree (0-1) vs. Exis (0-1)

[Sharp]
KS needs to bear down on some quality concepts and he has a chance to do it here. Exis barely battles, so there’s a lot to be said about the dude, and Innovator only used one angle last week. Question is, will KS be able to come up with something fresh? And if he can’t, will Exis take some feedback from his last verse into consideration? I think we could reasonably expect one or two quotable bars from Exis each week by the end of the season, which could outperform Spree on his worst days. Still, I’m waiting to see those quotes from Exis before I give him better odds.

Killing Spree: 70/30

[bleak]
If KS write more than 2 bars that aren't alcohol induced, he may end up cleaning up his Plot-esque image over the last forever. His first 2 bars in the last battle were solid pic disses. Ex has had all of his personals exhausted in one week, KS may find it hard to find inspiration. I have Ex in a no show.

Exis

Objective (1-0) vs. DynamiCz (1-0)

[Sharp]
I’m looking forward to this one. Objective is still finding his voice, where DynamiCz is still finding his audience. People like his shit, for sure, but he’s very likely to drop something that’s played out cause he just doesn’t know better (case in point: bow n aero last week). Objective is a great matchup for him since his opponent doesn’t battle much, so our voters will be less stringent. Objective doesn’t battle much, but it’s not like dude doesn’t and hasn’t battled. He’s already got some wording, he’s coming up with clever ideas and takes feedback well. I expect him to take the feedback he got last week and develop a little more. If Dy gets lazy or too experimental, Objective may just have something for him, but as it stands he’s the favorite.

DynamiCz: 70/30

[bleak]
Dy has a strange week ahead of him. He beat out a game Qualm verse in Wk1 with more of the same that we have seen from him recently. His style lands here, and while he may think a bit too out of the box sometimes, I think he will do enough here. For OBJ to win he will need to focus on attacking, harshness and direct disses.

DynamiCz 70/30

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Nng5xorDs

Incredible (0-1) vs. Ryno (0-1)

[Sharp]
This has potential to be a good one. Both suffer from weaker concepts, but Ryno has a clear advantage in wordplay and wording. Incredible is getting a feel for text battle bars and I can see him improving significantly over the season, but Ryno’s already there. I think Bash takes this one handily with cleaner wording, but if he gets too lazy with concepts Incredible isn’t too far off to manage an upset.

Ryno: 65/35

[bleak]
Inc has seen a decline in production since what I saw in BAL. He spent a bit of time away when at a pivotal spot in his progression. He will need to pick the torch back up and run with it for a while longer to find his way here. Ryno knows what he is doing, but may slack on a better than expected Inc verse to lose. Keep your head, stay consistent.

Ryno 60/40

Suthaveli (0-0) vs. Blue Bayou (0-0)

[Sharp]
I’m thinking this has BOTW potential. To be honest, I see Blue putting in more work in lower quality leagues so I have to think he’d be more motivated to kill it here. This means Suth has his work cut out for him in his first battle in nearly a year. I don’t wanna assume much about Suth since I’ve only seen a few battles in the last NBL season, but he’d need to step up his game a bit to hang with Blue, who’s likely fresh as ever (or just dumping out his notepad files to see where it takes him). Suth still has all his fundamentals down and is creative enough to edge a win, but Blue can tear up a fn or a fifty line battle so it’s hard to see anyone topping him in regs.

Blue: 65/35

2 later sign ins and a perfect matchup for week 2. I'm a fan of both writers here, Blue writes so much that his shit shouldn't hit as hard as it does. Suth may have a little something cooked up here for his shot to Beat Blue Bayou.

Blue: 60/40

[Outro]

Week one was definitely a success. The majority of our battles were dudes with effort. Real shit, I was impressed. All I can say is keep going with that and I’ll keep going with the mags. Shoutout to bleak for his sizeable chunk of the mag.
