19-19

Damn.

Maia has better hands, was catching Shields good standing.

But Shields seems to come out on top when they scramble.

10-9, Shields.

Shields spamming takedowns now, lol. Wants no parts of Maia standing.

Maia stuffs them all, then gets the takedown himself.

Ref stands them up for some reason.

10-9 Maia.

Close last round.

Shields was spamming takedowns again, but Maia stuffed them all.

Maia finished strong at the end standing.

lol did anyone expect a good fight between Maia and Shields? They're consistently two of the most boring fighters in the UFC. They have exceptional, if not fairly conservative, grappling technique, with barely adequate standup. I thought Maia was gonna win though, so a bit of a surprise I guess.

Jjake had a cpl impressive ass reversals...made maia look like an understudy...other than that shit was a snorefest

Shields' reversals were nice, but only possible because Maia was attempting to actually finish the fight and taking Shields' back for a rear naked choke.

Shields conversely just laid in Maia's guard and kept busy enough to not be stood up.

When Maia was on the bottom, he implemented an open guard to attempt subs from the bottom and sweeps.

When Shields was on the bottom, he implemented a closed guard in order to stall and get the fight stood up.

Either way, I think it's hard to assume this fight would be anything but a grappling war considering the two's credentials. Neither is known for their striking, so I'm not sure why people are complaining.

Jake mostly controlled the top and fought smart. I agree with the decision. I forgot what the top time was for both but I'm sure Jake's was much longer

The guard is a neutral position. Sitting in it doesn't quantify "control" when you're not doing anything. If anything, I'd say Maia was controlling Shields from the bottom.

If Maia was in that position the entire fight he would lose by a landslide. UFC is MMA not BJJ...

He shouldn't is the point. There is a difference between on top and having top control. The guard is designed specifically as a position of control for the bottom fighter. Once they are engaged in it the top fighter needs to fight for control...otherwise, by design the bottom fighter is in control. Which is exactly why Shields did nothing. He knew Maia was in control and he doesn't have the necessary skills to neutralize that control from within the guard. Any fighter will tell you the same.

Let's simplify. I'm actually quite intelligent, and if it comes down to it, I can write my ass off.
That should narrow it down. Also, I'm NOT the fat female one.

He's right, actually.

In BJJ, ADCC, etc if you're on top and in the guard, it's neutral and you're not scoring any points.

In MMA if you're on top and in the guard, you're winning the fight. Regardless of if you don't do anything there.

MMA judging is basically shit. It's designed for boring point fighting wrestlers to sit in people's guard and do just enough to not get the fight stood up.

@Richard Corey Diode Paul Harris is dope, lol. Pierce shouldn't of been talking shit. It's no different than Hendo Bisping or Sobral Heath.

I don't mind that top fighters "score points" in MMA; I do mind that they are automatically given rds for it though. Control isn't just a matter of looks...tell me who really was in control there. What was more threatening: Maia's guard, or Shields' lol..."GnP".
Tito Ortiz used to control cats from in their guards; Jon Jones controls you from in your guard. GSP has built a championship run on it. What Shields did was not what I describe as "control".
