I hop on a client call while chatting with GoW IM and come back to nonsense lol
the only difference between earlier today, when everything was fine, is that the site is in a slightly better position to be fine in the future now that we got a hold of GoW.
GoW hit me up within like a couple hours of a post i sent his way - i mean, that's more responsive than I normally am to direct IMs, let alone a post asking someone to get on IM.
So yea, if anything, anyone that likes the board should thank him for getting it back. At the end of the day, the members make the board -- so act like the people you want the board to be, and in time YOU'LL co-create it in your image.
I got love for this hobby today because of what it was in the past.
Because of like-minded people who shared a desire to convey their creativity through the written word --- and in a competitive environment. A competitive environment that helped me tap into a side of me that does, believe it or not, make me better at pretty much EVERYTHING i do today.
TROLL THIS YO: TEXT MADE ME BETTER IN REAL LIFE.
Text made me better at conveying my thoughts through words, written or spoken. Better at puttin my heart to paper through pen. Better in VERY SPECIFIC ways like a more extensive vocabulary which enables me to translate technical concepts to business executives as a digital strategist, and better at conceptualizing VERY HIGH-LEVEL concepts by being exposed to unique world-views and interacting with diverse individuals which have little else in common -- but THIS.
Damn straight text influenced my REAL LIFE. And if it's not influencing yours, then why are you wasting it?
Recognize this though:
GoW and I have very similar perspectives re: what's right about writing and what's wrong with this 'scene' today. Got love for what it was and what it could be, but not for a lot of the BS in the boarding culture.
There's a lot of talented writers on this board.... All the hate though, not just competitive fire type shit, but literal just hate, will create nothing but a void eventually.
I just do my thing here - GoW only admined me because he knows i share his vision of the past.... All the trollin and shit though -- just check yourselves.
I learned to ignore it, because I STILL don't understand it, and i do not plan on trying to. I just think the world is a fucked up place, full of fucked up people who fuck with others because they were once fucked with, and in doing so, further fuck up the world, themselves, and our collective future in the process. Until we change as individuals, whether on this board or beyond, things will continue to be all sorts of exponentially fucked up.
Changing any culture takes time. Oven not a light switch.
Please try to make this a place others want to be apart of -- and in time, it'll become the type of place YOU want to be apart of even more.
THAT AINT SOFT --- THAT'S LOGIC.
IF YOU WANT IT TO GET BETTER - then BE BETTER yourself, and stay stead-fast.
IF YOU SAY TEXT IS DEAD - you are killing it.

2003-2007 or so.
On the real, no, there wasn't. I don't know what site Mike Wrecka came from, but that was never true of B-boys. Or Rap Music. Or Rap Battles. Or Urban Prowlers. Or Rap Flava. Or Mr. Blunt. Or 411Hype. Or RhymeNReason. Or SOHH. Or UGHH. Or Braggingwrites. Or ... God, I forget the names of some of these sites.
I've been on these sites since 2000. The discussion forums always dominated, though sometimes they were mislabeled "Emcee Hookups" or shit like that.

This is why I came back after about three years away. I started to feel less creative. Being in topical leagues helps me write in every format. The restrictive style forces economy of words, or at least it should.
I have no doubt that the 500-plus text rap verses I've written in my life have improved my writing. And I write for a living.

there have been trolls since before there were even forums
anyone around to see a 'text album' should be aware now that those were actually just elaborate trolls of the past

you are telling me that in 2000 people were trolling on text sites? well the circle of sites I was at thankfully never had that element. Emcee Hookups were just that. setting up collabs. the OM style verses would get all the attention and views and responses. you don't remember when text sites had like the six or seven discussion forums? one would be like sports, the other would be music shit like that. no one ever went in there.
I owned and ran a moderately successful text site in 2000 that didn't even have a discussion or emcee hookup forum. it was dwarfed by the sites you named but it had around a 100 loyal members that posted about thirty OM verses a day. we used to all talk through AIM or chat rooms.

96 to around 2000, you're pretty much right Mike. We all just wrote rhymes. Around 99, at least on Sethros, we got a "discussion board", if you could call it that. Once Sethros died and UPN was formed - and I think some old ass version of vB was used, there was a real discussion board and eventually .. around where I think Diode was talking about in this thread - is when just writing rhymes all the time died off a bit.

You: "there was a time when the discussion forums were the least active part of a text site"
Not you: "There was a time when there were more writers than trolls."
Had you said the later, I would have agreed. But the former was never true at any of the major text sites.
But also, yes, there were trolls forever throughout the entire Internet. There were biters. There were hate votes. There were ignorant motherfuckers. There were people putting on acts. Some sites (Rap Music, Rap Battles) had more than others (RhymeNReason, Mr. Blunt). But trolls are forever.

I definitely remember active discussion boards at every site I went to by 2000. In some cases, they were mislabeled.
It makes a lot of sense that back in 1998 things were more focused on the writing. Communities were both smaller and less personal. Plus the boards were more streamlined, without subforums.
