INTRO by Mike Wrecka

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlHw5JpCmZY

What up its your homie Mike Wreck, doing the mag thing. AOWL in full effect. Attacking people like somebody on bath salts. Eating motherfuckers faces off. Leaving no survivors. Still the number one league on the net! Fuck you, hate me. We have a lot to talk about in this edition so lets get to it. First off, DUDES!!! have you like heard that new Arcade of Fire album? Indy Rock is so hot right now. At least it is in the AOWL. so put your lighters up. ok enough of that shit, Mr. J won the title last week defeating Certain. So big ups to our first title holder a very deserving Mr. J. kick ass man. this week he goes up against Vividlyvague in his first title defense. should be a dope match up. we have a Contender matchup of YDK vs Frank. this is really a grudge match on top of contender match. these two faced off before and it was a highly controversial match. YDK has been talking a lot of shit about Frank and now its time for these two to be locked in a cell together. Two men enter one man leaves type shit. Who will it be? Stay tuned. We have Certain on the Week 5 wrap up, Certain's Corner and the Power Index. We have King Ra. on the predictions this week as a guest writer. And I conducted a compelling interview with Split Eight. Check it out. and don't miss my ode to Witty. Oh and apparently Diode is a traitor. He has joined the dark side known as the AOWL and Adonis feels betrayed. How cute. Anyway voting has been amazing as usual, so lets keep it moving.

Text isn't dead, its alive and thriving in the AOWL!!!!!

WEEK 5 REVIEW by Certain

That was interesting. Colors provided a bunch of weird battles, most of which ended up being blowouts. The voting remains an asset to this league, though. Let's get to the breakdowns:

Title Match: Mr. J (4-1) beats Certain (4-1) 7-1
I took a risk, which isn't a good idea when writing a verse an hour before deadline. Mr. J capitalized with the best verse I've read from him, taking the color blue and writing a personification verse. He seems to be getting stronger every week, and he's a very fitting first champion.

Vulgar (3-0) beats Lexicon (1-2) 12-2
I wonder if Lexicon cost himself this battle by commenting on his verse. These were two good half-verses. Vulgar's writing has been rather grounded in this league, which makes sense. But I wouldn't mind seeing him unleash his full arsenal. Lexicon claims he's working off rust, but really with a little focus and polish he could have had a verse of the week contender.

Mike Wrecka (2-3) beats Adonis (2-2) 7-6
The week's only close battle came down to the final minutes of the voting period. With the topic orange, Mike Wrecka wrote a straightforward story about villagers and Adonis wrote a more abstract story about the Sun. The difference in approaches split voters. Adonis had moments of true beauty, while Mike Wrecka's story was more linear and consistent. Had we left it open for another day (or even hour), the outcome could have been reversed.

Split Eight (1-1) beats Genocide (0-1) 11-1
This was the battle of the week (unless the title match was, but I'll let you make that call) despite Split Eight's lopsided victory. Split Eight wrote a very polished bit of beautiful poetry about love, while Genocide came with furious rhymes in a verse about himself (or at least an imagined version of himself). It will be interesting to see if he breaks out of character in the future. These great writers didn't disappoint.

YDK (3-2) beats Zenland (2-3) 10-2
It was weird to see a writer as productive as Zenland leave so much on the table with his verse. He tried a different rhyme style, but that wasn't the issue. With the color crimson, he told a story that barely grazed the topic and didn't go very far at all. YDK went all-in, and it showed with a very fleshed-out story. The storytelling wasn't polished, but the content was enough to win.

PancakeBrah (2-1) beats breathless (1-3) 7-0
PancakeBrah wrote a verse about a soft-core porn latex girl or something doing graffiti. It was really good, one of the three standouts of the week alongside Mr. J and Split Eight. breathless' verse felt flat, sort of like the color gray, and then he flipped out for a moment. His personality is kind of fun, though.

Frank (3-2) wins via Innovator (2-3) disqualification
Innovator not only recycled a verse but recycled a verse that had nothing to do with the vague topic and recycled a verse that he lost with in a previous league. Frank wrote one of those fun, sort of spastic stories he's so prone to writing. He would have won in a shutout had I not exposed Innovator.

TYSON (1-0) wins via Dominate (0-1) no-show
These two spent most of the week talking trash, only to have TYSON post a short no-show verse and have Dominate let him off the hook.

Vividlyvague (4-1) wins via Just Write (3-1) no-show
Just Write disappointed me here by disappearing. I hope he comes back. Vividlyvague is probably the most creative writer in this league, but he also almost matches Zenland for most spastic. This week he wrote a story backward a la Nas' "Rewind," and it took me about four reads to have any real grip on what was going on. His word choice bounces from absolutely memorable to sloppy, while his flow tends to lean more toward the latter. But he's got so much ambition in him that he clearly is a threat in this league.

symetrik (1-1) wins via King Ra. (1-3) no-show
King Ra. had some weird reason for no-showing, something like he wrote 48 lines and didn't want to drop it against symetrik's much shorter verse. The thing is, that's ridiculous. symetrik actually brought it, even in a short fashion. You really have to read this verse to get it, but he tells a wildly depressing story with a lot of details and crisp writing in a very small space. I thought this was one of the five or six best verses of the week even despite its length.

POWER INDEX by Certain

Every week, I will rank the top 10 competitors in the league. These rankings will not be official or have any bearing on anything aside from my rankings. The goal will be to measure who is doing best in the league (excluding myself). You will not always agree, and I encourage you to post your own rankings. These are not verse of the week rankings, to be clear. They often won't line up with results or even necessarily with my own votes. So deal with it and enjoy them for what they are.

10. symetrik (1-1)
His verses have all been fewer than 20 lines, but he has a real mind for conceptualizing. Stop sleeping.

9. YDK (3-2)
He found a niche and seems prepared to ride that storytelling again.

8. Genocide (0-1)
Wait, I'm ranking someone without a win? Yes. He's probably better than you.

7. NYCSPITZ (2-2)
I'm still not sold he cares for the concept of a topic, but his writing can be great.

6. Vividlyvague (4-1)
His style is all over the place, but he clearly is invested and has been prodigious.

5. Split Eight (1-1)
He's almost certainly going to disappear at some point, but for the moment, he's not someone you want to face.

4. PancakeBrah (2-1)
He finally showed real investment in this league. That is scary for competitors.

3. Vulgar (3-0)
He's arguably the best writer in this league. But his style doesn't resonate with all voters.

2. Frank (3-2)
He hasn't lost when he's dropped a verse. He's also pushing the deadlines on verses and votes every week. He might be the favorite if he doesn't shoot himself in the foot.

1. Mr. J (4-1)
This is not a default position. Mr. J's only loss came when he let his opponent drop twice as much as him and he had computer problems. Don't fuck with him.

WEEK 6 PREVIEW by King Ra.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4oq0CNNfrY

Whaddup folks? This brings back memories don't it? Classic King putting in work and this week I will be covering the predictions. Blink too fast and I will have dropped another Super Trifecta magazine (negotiations in progress) so be on the look out. Anyways last week featured some cool match ups but this week we have even more competitors, so we should witness a lot of different styles and very close results in voting. I like to cut to the chase, so let's get to it.

ZYG (0-0) vs Diode (0-0)
ZYG & Diode make their seasonal debut. I'm sure Diode has written topicals before, but I have never read any of his pieces. ZYG was one of the dominant writers last season, and one could only imagine what he will bring to the table now. I believe both are going to be rusty so I don't expect any fireworks. ZYG drops quickly and Diode follows up with a solid piece that comes up short. ZYG, 60/40.

Cope (0-0) vs Witty (0-1)
Cope is a new member just getting his feet wet here while Witty returns after a bit of a break. Don't know too much about Cope but Witty is not a favorable first match up. He is a very good writer though whether he actually will show is in question. And that is how I am seeing it. Cope wins if Witty no shows, but I will give the Fox the benefit of the doubt here, in a match he should take easily barring any surprises. Witty, 90/10.

TYSON (1-0) vs symetrik (1-1)
TYSON is coming off a no-show victory over Dominate last week, in what I thought would be a potentially good match up with all the back and forth talk that went on in the chat thread. symetrik, too, is coming off a no-show victory (the King spared a W, crazy generous) as well & I expect both competitors to show here. I haven't seen TYSON drop a topical in a long time and he tends to no-show a lot. From what I've read from symetrik thus far, while his style is a bit on the basic side, he has the ability to come up with some interesting approaches to the topics. He will need to step it up here though because, while it's hard to trust TYSON to actually drop (scout's honor, huh?), when he does, he can be pretty darn good. Aside from a possible no-show, TYSON will drop and get by with ease. TYSON, 80/20.

Genocide (0-1) vs Lexicon (1-2)
I would call this my sleeper match of the week because I'm sure a lot of people will overlook the possible gems that could be dropped here between two very well accomplished writers. What can you say about Geno? He does it all when it comes to writing & he has one thing that not too many writers can say they have: CONSISTENCY. So I expect nothing less than a very solid piece from Spitler here. Lexicon (Angkor) is no slouch either. I was very impressed with his piece last week but as most other voters stated, he slacked off at the end but the concept/approach really caught my attention. Now I hope that he brings that and more in this match up. This is a toss up. I can see Lex actually putting together a much more rounded piece this time around. But with all the commotion with Geno, I am gonna gamble on him doing enough here to take the W. But this is going to be extremely close. Genocide, 51-49.

patrown (2-2) vs Fig (0-2)
This match up was a late shoe in and pits together two "interesting" writers. Fig (Untitled, bitches) is known to no-show. And that's a bad thing. Seriously. Take a hint. He is capable of being very good but one can only wonder if he will make that jump. patrown on the other hand is usually known for short stories but at his peak, they can be gems. His record tells the tale of two sides. Going into this match up, Fig will need to actually concoct a story (and that's if he shows) because I believe patrown has an itch and he is going to scratch that itch and then he will drop a solid piece that will get him the W- whether Fig shows or not. patrown, 70/30.

UPSET OF THE WEEK!!!
Mike Wrecka (2-3) vs breathless (2-2)
I could have sworn Mike just said he was going to focus more on running the league than participating, but it seems like he must have got some motivation because here he is this week competing against breathless. From what I've read from breathless so far this season, he has shown the potential, but I feel he still has a bit of a ways to go. He has faced some still competition thus far (Vator, Mr. J, Pancake) but seems to be improving each week that passes. Wrecka is another tough match up, but question is which Wrecka will we see? Mike can drop some really good stories but he can also drop some not-so-good ones either. One week he looks like a top 5 writer, the next just average. Either way, breathless shouldn't take this match lightly and I expect him to drop his best work of the season right here. Is Mike motivated? Hard to say. I'm getting the feeling this match will be too close for comfort. So close, that I see breathless breaking through and notching a key victory. breathless, 55-45.

Adonis (2-2) vs Zenland (2-3)
I should call this my "laughter of the week" because from what I peeped in the chat thread, I don't think Adonis & Zen are going to take the topic that seriously. And they may just be going for entertainment points. Zen has steadily rose as a prominent writer and when he is on, he can drop some of the more intriguing stories. His style is just as crazy as his persona but it benefits him well in writing. Adonis has been a bit chippy lately, but he is a seasoned vet when it comes to the topical scene. I wasn't totally impressed with his work last week, and that wasn't his best work, but when it comes to imagery/descriptions, I have him up there. He doesn't really go the story route, so I can see both of these pieces being conceptually written. Who has the edge though? I like Zen's style of writing a lot and if what went on in the chat thread is any indication, we may not see that kind of level this week. I feel Adonis, however, is going to drop the okie-doke, meaning "Zen I know we laughed and teased and all but bitch I'm dropping for real, for real". For real. Adonis, 60/40.

King Ra. (1-3) vs Split Eight (1-1)
I don't want to leave you out of the predictions Splitster so here it is. What can I tell you about my match up? It will be dope. It will be better than all the others. Zen will smoke a pipe after reading it. Adonis will threaten Lars. Dominate will drop kick TYSON into a no-show. Certain will turn to Doubt. Vulgar will champ without competing in the match this week. Frank will show.... late. YDK will fuck his wife even if the baby cries tonight. ZYG will zag. Diode will die old because that's what his name sounds like. Fig will drop. Mike will wreck. breathless will breathe again. Vivid will vote for me. Mr. J change back to his squiggly name. Pancake will waffle. symetrik will drop an abstract story. patrown will drink and drive. Cope will wonder when will I drop in our battle. Witty will outfox himself. Genocide will drop 10 OM pieces in 3 minutes. And Lexicon will die from the amazement of Gen's feat. Split will acknowledge me for actually writing something for our match up and I personally, wish you all an eggful Halloween because I just hope one of you gets hit with an egg and catches a concussion. I win, bastards. The fuck you thought?, 50/50. (see what I did there? <3).

SLEEPER MATCH OF THE WEEK!!!
CONTENDER MATCH: YDK (3-2) vs Frank (3-2)
I was very impressed with YDK's piece last week as he told one of the better stories while beating a good opponent in Zenland. This week is his biggest challenge. Frank is a writer in his own league. Last season he showed that he could write multiple stories in multiple styles under multiple alias and beat 2-3 people every week. What can you say though? The guy is that good so YDK is in for a heated bout. With Frank being just a step closer to becoming a champion again, I expect nothing more than an immaculate piece. I only wonder if he will actually put together a gem or take YDK lightly. While YDK is more improved, he still could use some work. I doubt Frank will no-show, which is honestly, at this moment the only way I see YDK going to the championship aside Frank also taking this lightly, but those are two scenarios I just don't see happening. Frankie goes on to the championship match. Frank, 70/30.

SPOTLIGHT MATCH #2!!!
TITLE MATCH: Mr. J (4-1) vs Vividlyvague (4-1)
If it weren't for the Vulgar/Certain match up, or the Pancake/NYC one, this would be a BOTW match but I expect both sides to drop that level of verses in this one. Mr. J beat a very solid Certain last week and makes his first title defense against Vivid, who has been on a tear this year. Both of these guys are really good. J always has a very smoothly written piece but in my eyes, sometimes the content isn't the best. When he does put together a good story it is hard to beat. Vivid has been under the radar in my eyes, but his style is one of the unique ones in this league and so far, it has gotten him some good wins and now a chance to claim the title. It's really hard to choose the winner here because both are good at what they do best. While I like Mr. J's very clean approach, Vivid's unorthodox way of writing to me can be hit or miss, but I feel like I could gamble on it here. Plus that hit/miss ratio is 4 out of 5, and in this champ match, I see J dropping a very good story but Vivid putting together a fresh style with a fresh concept and claiming his first title win of the season. Vividlyvague, 55-45.

SPOTLIGHT MATCH #1!!!
PancakeBrah (2-1) vs NYCSPITZ (2-2)
BOTW potential. Foundations will be shakened here. Two of the most prolific writers get ready to clash this week. This is championship-like. Last season, getting these two to show up and drop was a pain in the neck, but this is going down. It's got to. Otherwise, fuck them both for getting my hopes up. NYCSPITZ, has THE best flow topically hands down. Which is why he is one of my favorite writers to read. I know, Black, right? And yes, Black is just as good, but I like NYC's approach. That verse he dropped against Vulgar like 2 weeks ago, was butter smooth though not on topic, so let's hope that isn't the case here. Pancake has one of those unique ways of writing. The presentation of his pieces to me resonates with the tone of the story he tells, and he taps in to the emotions very well. I expect this match to be a classic. It will probably come down to preference with voting with how tight I believe these stories will be. It's honestly a difficult prediction to make. I am assuming the winner here will end up in the contender's match setting themselves up to get the title so that is even more incentive to go with this. I can't choose. So you decide. Even, 50/50.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK!!!
Vulgar (3-0) vs Certain (4-1)
Does Certain get back into contendership if he pulls off a win this week? Just a thought because this is another pound for pound match up that should be worth the read. Certain is coming off that title loss to Mr. J, which is surprising because he seemed to me like the most dominant writer this season. And I still believe he will be a problem for anyone. His opponent, Vulgar is one of the best, if not, THE best. Last week's piece wasn't one of his best work though, imo, so I only can wonder if he rushed it, was pressed for time or what, because it wasn't the typical Vulgar-esque story we know of. He can't afford to slip right now because a win here means possibly a contender match. Certain will probably be looking to get another title shot and I think he is hungry and motivated from that loss. So who do I think will win here? This isn't as difficult a pick as Pancake/NYC for me. Vulgar will come with a more fleshed out story and will not slack BUT.... I'm getting an instinct that Certain can pull this off? It's hard for me to pick against Vulgar because that is rare. Too rare. But my gut feels Certain will somehow, someway make this a difficult vote and possibly serve Vulgar his first loss of the season. Certain, 51-49.

Witty

When you signed into the league for week 1, I was like no doubt,
but then you no showed Certain and made me say wtf is that all about,
I was so mad that I walked outside and stared at the sky,
and screamed out as loud as I could, WHY WITTY WHY?!?,
I felt burned, like I had just been set on fire, damn,
so I found a map, and put a giant X through Ireland,
I told Genocide, lets kick him out the crew I need space to grieve,
but you wouldn't de sig, and you just wouldn't leave,
so I thought maybe, he is my friend , he was just really busy,
and I heard Dublin this time of year is actually really pretty,
he was probably just visiting the Irish Springs having fun,
walking around with his shillelagh while soaking in the sun,
so I forgave and forgot, all was forgiven,
getting you into the AOWL again became my main mission,
when you signed in for week 6 I once again felt alive,
but now that you still haven't checked in, i think im gonna die,
WHY WITTY WHY

how do you top that? with a little thing we call Certain's Corner aka known as "CC." that's how. Ok anything would have topped that. fuck you hate me

CERTAIN'S CORNER "Flow Ton"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTAud5O7Qqk

I can't hear you. I don't know how you pronounce a word with that slight accent or lilt. I have no idea how well you rap fast or slow or how many bars you can get out without taking a breath. The only members of this league whose voices I've heard are Genocide, Fig, Vulgar and breathless, and those were one-time occurances. No, I'm not soliciting your audio clips.

When we read text rap, we become the rappers. We're like Dr. Dre, handed a verse written by someone else and told to figure out the cadence and flow for ourselves. As with all things in these leagues, a close reader is always right. If the reader can't pick up your cadence or thinks your rhymes are too slanted or thinks you stretched some parts, that's because you didn't write well enough for your reader's sense of flow. (The same is true for all aspects of writing in these leagues: The readers, at least those putting in their due dilligence, are the ones responsible for determining what works and what doesn't. But that's for another time.)

There's no point complaining. You either take the criticism every week or adapt. So let's talk about what makes a good flow in text, using examples from Week 5 and breaking it down into three categories: rhymes, schemes and sound devices.

Nobody extends rhymes quite like Frank. It's one of the reasons he gets away with his incredibly loose and sporatic schemes. Frank wants the freedom to rhyme when he pleases, but in order to do this effectively, he has to rhyme off the same sounds. That allows readers to keep focused on what the rhymes are even when they're often many syllables apart. Here's an example:

"thank you for making reservations with bay cruise..
we hope your hungry this morning, we're in preparation of bagels..
whether, your here with us on vacation or celebration - please stay tune..
this is your mate. Jesus .
your destination await you''

(forecast)

'it's a beautiful day for bathing suits –
lively 82 degrees, warm breeze from the northeast –
sky - baby blue..
weather might be too perfect with spring training & these yankees due..
now down to stacy with more info on the trading views..
FRANKY! Your not going to believe the fire in this ace's fuse!

Notice how the rhyme changes as it continues. These rhymes would be really easy to pick apart if they were coming in couplets. But Frank is building on the same sound of the rhyme and allow it to evolve naturally, so that "yankees due" and "bagels" are far enough apart and evolved enough that the difference isn't that noticeable.

Zenland takes a different tack toward rhyming, also using the same rhyme over and over again but doing it in close proximity. He's putting a lot of pressure on his rhymes in the start of his verse:

She waits and stares at her straightened hair
In the mirror with her graceful pair
Of eyes which appears braced and prepared,
But she's late. She's scared.
So she makes a prayer to calm her nerves...
...But she's lost for words
And a nauseous surge caused a purge
That filled the walls of her purse.
She breathed when she paused in spurts.

With Zenland's style, the flow develops because the rhymes are one on top of the other. With Frank's, it works because they come right when you need them to without distracting. Zenland uses multiple-syllable rhymes to build his verse around, while Frank uses them to keep you grounded while his content is taking off.

For schemes, well, PancakeBrah is a pro. While it's easy to rave about the people like Neighbor in this category, PancakeBrah's schemes are more complicated and delicate. He often rhymes off difficult words and mixes up how he structures his rhymes in very creative ways. Instead of rhyming the fuck out of everything, he uses strategic entry points:

He stared, affixed and straight, to one wall of the cell
of the six by eight, and ignored the waveless minute's wake
where he was accosted to dwell. He kept to his own,
cleared his dinner plate, and welcomed this home.
When the lights would quell, he sat cross legged on the cot,
stare still affixed, and imagined the sights he'd spell
with his grips on a valve, dispelling his thoughts.

Pick up the interplay of the rhymes. They don't come in when you might expect them to, and he consistently has more than one rhyme going. That allows for flexibility even as he also grounds his verse in rhyme. It's actually easy to miss how often PancakeBrah rhymes because of how intricate his schemes can be and how naturally he words things in the meantime.

But Genocide has the best flow in this league. And he does it by using a wide variety of strategies. His rhymes are frequent and deep, and his scheme shifts as he needs it to but never completely breaks. But what I like most is the way he develops his rhymes off assonance, the use of verb sounds to create fluidity:

Its like written music notes in the form of books
Swarms of hooks, lyrics, spirits in the storm afoot
Horns, accordians, a performance only war could match
He found a void, adapt, becoming poised with that
And had a big problem in school, but wrote a column of news
His psychological mood was under doctors review
But the kid was just a product of growth, odder than most
While other peers blossomed he was watched as a joke

See how he bounces "storms afoot" into "horns, accordians" and "war could match." Then he turns "doctors review" into "product of growth." Those aren't rhymes, but they use a similar vowel sound to ease the transition between different rhymes. Often writers can jar a reader by switching drastically between two different rhyme sounds. This is another way to approach the issue Frank deals with through repeatedly using the same rhyme.

So yes, text can flow. I can't imagine anyone reading those latter two passages and complaining about the flow. But it's not simple. And there's no point in complaining when someone doesn't pick up your cadence. Rethink your approach, and try to figure out what you could have done better. That's what this league is for. And no, I don't care about how well you rap to beats. I can't hear them. I can't hear you.

THE INTERVIEW Split Eight, by Mike Wrecka

What up im here with Split Eight, everyone's favorite non rhyming rhymer. Big up , what it look like what it do. ?

Hey fellas, im typing this on a calculator right now. Isnt that neat? Oh and im from Boston so I am guaranteed to sound like a retard when I talk. Just wanted to say that. But im introverted and don't speak often. Ive said too much.

True true. So what is your writing process in a league like this?

Well first I write a verse that rhymes, then just to make it artsy and cool, I take out all the rhymes. And ofcourse I make sure it has no flow before I post it. Flow is not cool. na mean?

Not at all. oh btw Red Sox are gay.

Not cool man. I love Big Papi. I would like to crawl into his jock strap and just live there.

Ok Spit 8. I have had quite enough of your shenanigans but before I let you go why don't you explain to the people your modding record here on NC 2.0

Oh sure dude. I took Mikes idea for a topical league and started one with King Keith, AOWL season 1. When King Ra. bailed on the league and left it to die, well I just crawled up in the fetal position and did nothing. I also modded the WCL for like a day but was completely overwhelmed and disappeared until it was all over. Modding could be scary. I don't like confrontation.

Well said. FIN

LEAGUE RECORDS compiled by Mike Wrecka

these are not the official rankings. these are only the league records to give you an idea of where you might stand. we rank based on wins. 3-3 is better than 2-0 and so forth. so the more wins you have the higher the rank. in the case of two people having the same amount of wins, the first tie breaker is head to head results. the second tie breaker is strength of schedule. a competitors opponents wins are added together. then whoevers opponents has the most wins, takes that tie breaker. that's why 3-3 might be better than 3-0. the first guy has faced more opponents so his strength of schedule may be stronger. this is to encourage participation.

12 People will make the playoffs.
