Battling is the key to the site thriving because it transfers into a livelier Discussion board. I really enjoy that the topical side is getting it's time in the sun as I much prefer to write than battle. But overall we (topical writers) have a very different dynamic than the battlers do. Outside of the random beef, it's much more cordial and community focused. One look at the AOWL and Winter Topical discussion topics proves that. Whereas when battling is thriving it's a lot of shit talking and in turn more entertainment. It's less subdued. The main problem isn't just the running/administering of the battling events it's that the headliners don't battle anymore. Beyond/Hush/GoW/Cashius/Knux and countless other top tier battlers just don't battle anymore, some don't even visit the site at all. So when these tourneys/leagues start it's usually a bunch of mid to low-tier battlers or no names. The vets who ARE here see that and aren't interested; there's no prestige to winning and no vendettas to go after. It's a vicious cycle. Sharp's doing a great job with running the NBL but the key is the participants. You have to get the heavy hitters back. The topical side is stacked and motivated. That's the only important difference.

Yes, anyone can write topicals. Why? See, topical writing essentially is writing with rhymes and a single focus. Any style is accepted. It's a much less narrow-minded field.

Battling demands sameness for some reason, though it wasn't always like that. Very few people have differing battle styles. The equivalent would be if all topical verses were expected to be Vulgar-style philosophical abstracts.

That's one of the reasons people leave battling for topical writing. It's a more freeing genre. It also translates much, much better to real writing.

I can't think of a single case where someone was a dedicated topical writer, then stopped to become a text battler.

I couldn't beat many elite battlers in their own field.

But the only so-called battler to take me down in a topical that I can remember was Fracture, and I hadn't yet hit my stride at that point. I've beaten plenty since.

We don't need a special tournament. You can sign into the league for a week or two, and you'll get your taste. In fact, I'll promise now that any respected battler who signs into the AOWL Season 3's first week will be matched against a topical writer of similar distinction.

And i wasnt battling superstars.....but after 30sum battles people noticed the arena was active .....then i had them re introduce the belt

My opinion is that once you achieve a certain thing then there is really no further to go. and topical is not harder to do then to battle, in a battle a lot of the styles may be the same but the concepts are not while topicals are hard to write you have ALOT more freedom in your writing.

whoever said that vets need to battle is spot on. when I first stared battling, there were enough mid to top-tier vets battling that you had a chance to work your way up and challenge someone good and respectable. I had a couple of losses early on that got me more attention than any of my wins, because a close loss to a legit vet is better than any dominant win over a nobody. Right now, no vets are out, and if they do get challenged, they hissy fit themselves into turning the tide of the battle, or out of competition altogether. When I first started beating vets, they complained for a bit, then let it go. I don't know what happened to that attitude - instead of wanting a rematch, people just expect to never lose and flip out if they do.

in short, as cake said, the only meaningful difference in the topical vs. battle scene now is that topical has it's main events around, whereas the battlers are hibernating in discussion forums and deny anyone a chance to take the torch from them. If more vets battled, newbs could see what makes a good verse and learn for themselves (no training program), and it would be motivation because you could beat the Hush's, GOW's, Bags'/etc.
