Season 3

That was an eventful first week. We had a handful of really good battles, along with a bunch of expected no-shows. But as I pointed out, there were fewer no-shows in Week 1 of this season than last season. And now we hopefully have weeded out the uncommitted.

This week's topics are song quotes, so I hope you enjoy. I don't advise that you attempt to mimic the songs quoted but rather to use the quotes as the same type of quote topics you might see normally. You'll notice two changes to sign-in threads: There are no more extensions, as battles are due Fridays, and the 48 lines/650 words limit has now become either/or, so as long as you're under one of them, you are fine.

Here are the matchups:

Just Write (1-0) vs. El Pancake (1-0) | "I never said I would stay to the end." — Robert Smith
Frank (1-0) vs. Clockwerk (1-0) | "Even in defeat, there's a valuable lesson learned." — Jay Z
Mike Wrecka (1-0) vs. Vividlyvague (1-0) | "You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past." — Bruce Springsteen
Vulgar (1-0) vs. H4ZE (1-0) | "To live outside the law, you must be honest." — Bob Dylan
Cereal_Killa (1-0) vs. patrown(1-0) | "Who needs peace when you can profit from being right?" — Eyedea
ZYG (1-0) vs. oats (1-0) | "Winning isn't everything, and this is not a race." — Aceyalone
Diode (1-0) vs. Adonis (1-0) | "Though my problems are meaningless, that don't make them go away." — Neil Young
Greed (1-0) vs. Ink (1-0) | "No one knows what it's like to be the bad guy." — Pete Townshend
timeless (1-0) vs. TYSON (0-1) | "Rain comes out the sky every time somebody dies." — Nas
Pinot Grij (0-0) vs. fresh (0-0) | "All we know is the beginning. Nobody controls the way that it ends." — Royce da 5'9"
Innovator (0-1) vs. Totoro (0-1) | "He who will die is he who will kill." — Joe Strummer
Exoduzt (0-1) vs. King Ra. (0-1) | "Walking side by side with death, the devil mocks their every step." — Robert Plant
sacrifice (0-1) vs. Objective (0-1) | "I hope you wake up in time for the revolution." — Common
dull boy (0-1) vs. dyedinthewool (0-1) | "I don't care what you think, unless it is about me." — Kurt Cobain
maths debate (0-1) vs. neutral (0-1) | "Exploitation is the world's oldest occupation." — Ras Kass
WZA (0-1) vs. YDK (0-1) | "I'm not half the man I used to be." — Paul McCartney

I am allowing a one-time leniency on not voting, in that TYSON, Totoro, Innovator and Kyzo may turn their losses to wins by voting on three extra battles this week. This one-time-per-competitor opportunity (excluding Week 16, obviously) will be available throughout the season, though not voting will eliminate you from the playoff automatic qualifer.

Also, I let the small handful of those who lost in Week 1 and didn't vote stay in the league, but that won't happen again for anyone.

Well, you have to start with the early stuff with Neil Young because it's his best, most consistent work and because it's the early stuff.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (1969) is my favorite of his albums. After the Gold Rush (1970) is his most critically revered (though he has at least four albums vying for that title). And Harvest (1972) is his most popular. Those are his second, third and fourth solo albums. (His self-titled solo debut was uneven.)

When you get through those, On the Beach (1974), Tonight's the Night (1975) and Rust Never Sleeps (1979) are strong representations of his middle period. On the Beach is viewed on the same level as the first three I named, though I think it's a step behind. There's a few more in the late 1980s and early 1990s that I'm not very familiar with that draw plentiful praise.

But I am more familiar with the stuff from the past decade or so, and I really like Prairie Wind (2005) and Le Noise (2010).

Eŋg

Posting or messaging a verse on time counts as showing, unless that verse is disqualified. That includes eight-line verses or whatever when you know your opponent won't show. The voting will be the bigger impediment for many.

I just interview well. I have no concrete fallback. I envy people with concrete options. Caring about sounding pretentious is a completely Internet thing.

I've quoted this a few times and I'm sure more notable people have said something to the same effect but my favorite quote from anyone on netcees is Split Eight saying "if the internet went away I think everyone would be a little relieved." One of the most concise and intelligent things I've ever read. I do miss the opportunity to not see everything everyone has to say. To be yourself, and to try hard and brag without being shit on. Whether you choose not to admit to it or understand it, the internet effects every fucking thing. It's a huge boon to society but a pain to every single one.

Alcohol's cool.

No, I'm saying that unadulterated appreciation of yourself is simply unacceptable nowadays. Which can be good in some cases but it shouldn't be universally panned, which it basically is.

I don't know. I think pretentiousness rose with the Internet. Yuppies were looked down on back in the day. Now hipsterism is at a high because of pretentiousness.

But maybe that's different than the self-confidence you are discussing. It's a different type of pretense.

Cake I'm glad you mentioned that about people being relieved if the internet went away. I know I would. Social media has completely made being a narcissistic acceptable, even expected.

I think being a self-aware person makes it hard to cope with the internet/social media in particular. Facebook gives me a weird social anxiety, something that actual human interaction never has. Even me saying "I know that sounds pretentious" as a preface is second-nature at this point, and no doubt the direct result from me dwelling on how I'm perceived by others, which is magnified by the internet.

You're closer to my age, yeah?

Kids like Cake and Split say such stupid things because they've lived their entire lives with an internet. They don't know life without it and what a true revolution this whole thing has been. Our generation watched it all happen from childhood through high school. That's why I hate seeing myself or anyone born in the early 80s get lumped in with "millenials". I grew up with commies trying to nuke me, newfangled touchtone telephones, tvs with UHF and VHF knobs, VHS and mixtape cassettes, saturday morning cartoons, video arcades and pinball machines, DARE/McGruff, staying out until the street light came on, pay phones, and a whole host of other things the "millenials" have no experience with.

They're from an entirely different planet with on demand access to everything, "terrorism" / "zero tolerance", and an always-on, always-available social and informational web with unlimited information. They sure as hell didn't spend $2000 on Encyclopedia Brittanica or learn the Dewey Decimal system and Card Catalogs.. or buy their stuff from the JC Penney catalog..

Wow. Probably the worst post in the history of netcees. Well done.

oats , I am a teacher as well. personally I wouldn't want to do more with my life. its the best job on the planet imo. I work 181 days a year. if I choose to not to do summer school. and I get off at 3 PM everyday. its the job that allows me to work the least and still make a decent living

now if only my wife could get a job in a school things would be incredible. while im on vacation she is usually working. that's why you see so many married teacher couples.

I can't write even though I want to. Anyone ever experienced writers block due to going through some shit? It's like, I start off well with around 6-10 lines, then everything I thought of (concepts, storyline, creativity etc.) just goes blank and I can't seem to continue on it so I kinda have to start over with something else. This is normally when I write the most and can get a decent written done in 20-30 minutes so it's a new experience to me. If anyone can relate; How did you get through it, or how did you manage to set shit aside so you could write like you normally would etc?
