Depends what you listen to music for I guess.

If you are listening because you like thought provoking and intelligent lyrics then yeah Nas is better, if you're listening just for something to bump, a catchy hook or a nasty flow, Jay is the best in that regard.

I don't like how hypocritical he is in his own preachiness.

Exactly.

And I don't like how often he twists facts to the point where he simply is misleading unintelligent and malleable minds.

Every year, Nas drops a little on my favorite rappers list, not because of his new stuff specifically (I like Life Is Good quite a bit) but because that act wears thin. But Illmatic is perfect.

Jay Z can be as good as Nas, at times, which means it's a choice he makes. Nas can't be as commercial or entertaining while maintaining some semblance of himself. Jay is more diverse. All these things go into who the better rapper is, I guess. Nas doesn't annunciate as clearly, and this plays a role in who the better rapper is, I think. Nas is more consistently intense, but Jay can do it, but I don't feel he can do AS well as Nas. Jay is a better rapper, I'd say.

Nas checked Jay-Z and his gangster claims with Ether and gave him a reality check. There is no debating that. He refutes every claim Jay-Z ever made regarding being a thug and then points to the fact that Jay-Z has bitten Biggie so many times, its not even funny. And Jay-Z calls it paying homage... lol

Jay IS paying homage, though. I don't know how anyone can listen to those lines and honestly think he's biting. He's blatantly alluding to Biggie when he does that. Although NaS' delivery on that line in Ether made it work.

Bladed Thesis
04-10-2014, 07:21 PM
Biggie on “Kick in the Door”:

Your reign on the top was short like leprechauns
As I crush so-called Willies, thugs and rapper dons
Jay-Z on “The Ruler’s Back”:

Your reign on the top was shorter than leprechauns
You can’t fuck with Hov, what kind of X you on?
The minimal, non-transformative alterations don’t add any value to Biggie’s original; rather, they suspiciously serve to mask the line’s origin…

Biggie on “You’re Nobody Till Somebody Kills You” (Jay must really like this song!):

Stop your blood-clot crying
The kids, the dog, everybody dying, no lying
which Jay-Z bites unaltered on “D.O.A.”:

Stop your blood-clot crying
The kid, the dog, everybody dying, no lying
And so on and so on. Jay claims he’s honoring Biggie, but the untransformed, verbatim bites seem to stifle creativity; at times, he seems to use Biggie lines as filler, which is disrespectful to B.I.G. and Jay both.

In addition to the “artfully transformative”-factor, another worthwhile consideration in judging the merit of a bite is the recognizability of the line bitten: if Jay copies a well-known line, the claim of homage becomes more credible. If he were to quote a classic Biggie line — one that every white person in America knows, say, “It was all a dream, I used to read Word Up Magazine” or “I love it when you call me big poppa” then purists wouldn’t have a problem.

But he never does that…

One could contend that Jay is trying to draw attention to lesser-known jewels through his knock-offery. But an amateur rap audience is unlikely to catch the reference, tending to give Jay-Z credit for clever lines that are actually Biggie’s. To make matters worse, Jay-Z’s Biggie-bites are most often found in his radio-designed singles, which command a novice audience.
basically this...

Bladed Thesis

bullshit. He takes little known lines of Biggie's and then spins them to hide where they came and fit himself. Why would he tailor the line to be about himself if he's paying homage? He's not, he's biting small little lines that aren't from popular Biggie songs and DOESN'T GIVE credit or EVER say its from Biggie or an homage to Biggie until he got caught.

That's not how you pay homage...

Bladed Thesis

Biggie, "Victory"
“I perform like Mike, anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson”

Jay-Z, "Niggas in Paris"
“I’m liable to go Michael, take your pick; Jackson, Tyson, Jordan, game 6.”
I can grab hundreds more.

Yes, HUNDREDS. There are hundreds of lines he swipes from Biggie.

Because there are "facts" here. This is entirely opinion based. You don't know. You have a bias, so you're going to say any line that is remotely close to a "bite" is a bite, dead stop. Whereas I am of the opinion that they're for the most part homages. This could be an argument that goes on for pages. The end result will be a bunch of posts, a handful of sentences, some quoted lines, and neither of us changing our opinion. So I, instead, posted something that did not present an argument. I just posted a random post. I would like to engage you in a fierce debate about an artist I don't care that much about, except I wouldn't like to do that because internet.

Is the point not to actually dis the other person? I love "Ether." It's both more listenable and more aggressive than "Hit 'Em Up." The same is true for "Takeover." If the goal isn't to embarrass the other person through personal attacks, then what is it?

"Aggressive" might not be the right word. When I say that, I mean personal and cruel. "Hit 'Em Up" essentially was an homage to saying "I'm going to kill you" and "You're gay" in various ways. "Ether," "Takeover" and "Malcolm X" were specific, biting and relevant.

2Pac was a very talented lyricist. His dis tracks were terrible, though. He didn't care because he only wanted money and fame.

I agree, but you have to admit that "I'm gonna kill you" is a little different coming from Death Row records. I listen to Nas et al in a different way than I listen to Westside Connection nah mean.

I think Pac is underrated as a lyricist, but his appeal isn't lyrical I don't think. He's a larger than life persona, and what always connected with me was his unflinching honesty and openness, not so much any type of lyrical flare.

I hear people say this stuff all the time. I have never understood it, but that's because I think of Me Against the World as his defining statement.

They say pussy and paper is poetry, power and pistols
Plotting on murdering motherfuckers 'fore they get you
Picturing pitiful punk niggas copping pleas
Puffing weed as I position myself to clock G's
My enemies scatter in suicidal situations
Never to witness the wicked shit that they was facing
Pockets is packed with presidents, pursue your riches
Evading the player-hating tricks, while hitting switches
Bitches is bad-mouth, cause brawling motherfuckers is bold
But y'all some hoes, the game should be sewed
The sickest psychotic society somebody save me
Addicted to drama so even mama couldn't raise me
Even the preacher and all my teachers couldn't reach me
I run in the streets and puffing weed wit my peeps
I'm ducking the cops, I hit the weed as I'm clutching my Glock
Niggas is hot when I hit the block, what if I die tonight

That seems pretty lyrical.

that's easily his best album imo, but still that doesn't appeal to my lyrically so much as it appeals to my sense of veracity, for lack of a better way to put it. He encapsulated the paradoxes of humanity more than any other MC, and did so in a way that was epic on a grand scale.

he's not a bad lyricist by any standards, but what sticks out to me about him was his passion; the conviction behind what he said rang louder than what he actually said. of course, if he was saying stupid shit or was a simplistic MC it wouldn't be quite the same either, but when I think 2-Pac, "lyricist" is not one of the first things that comes to mind.

Is the point not to actually dis the other person? I love "Ether." It's both more listenable and more aggressive than "Hit 'Em Up." The same is true for "Takeover." If the goal isn't to embarrass the other person through personal attacks, then what is it?

Super Ugly absolutely fucking slayed me though when I heard that shit on radio, literally game over, Jay brought the roflzzz

Surely you are smart enough to understand the entire beef was fabricated to increase interest in both and East Coast rap at a key time in the genre's history, right? And surely you understand that after "Ether," Jay Z only grew more famous and more successful, right?

I know some people here are Simpletons, but I expect more out of you than this.
Ouch, hit you right in the feels huh

It's not a bite. It's the same thing Jay Z does. It's called allusion and is an invaluable part of all sorts of writing.
