The earth does go thru temperature cycles, but to the extent it's at right now is supposedly more than it would normally have... I only really trust the ipcc with this sort of info tbh

obvi earth is getting warmer and it coincides w/ industry/pollution but doesn't mean it's not a natural occurence. I saw a couple utube of PhDs saying mad made global warming is a hoax and they all know 100x more science than any textcee...
Brief synopsis my Asian brother:
Facts:
Earth is getting warmer.
Part of it is cyclical.
Part of it is caused by human activity.
Gray areas:
How much is cyclical and how much is caused by human activity.
The real world effect of the increasing temperature.
There is almost unanimous consensus in the scientific community that global warming is happening and is at least partially man's fault. I would approach scientists that say otherwise with extreme skepticism.

Consider that many industries have their hand in funding many scientists and their projects.
Now consider that many of these industries create a by product of carbon dioxide/hydrocarbon emissions as part of their general manufacturing activity.
Consider the amount of money it would take for all of these industries to reduce / eliminate their level of emissions.
Now consider how much it would cost to pay off a few scientists to say what they want.
You're welcome.

NYC there are thousands of qualified biologists that flatly deny evolution despite it being widely accepted as fact by the rest of the scientific community.
There are always gonna be ppl that go against the majority of scientists on big issues because either they have a vested interest or they want to make a name for themselves

good point swerve but i'm not buying it. Renewable energy companies all fall under the overarching arm of big oil. If they were all greedy capitalists there would be a stronger force for the global warming hoax theory. Like oatmeal said I think it's a combination of man made and cyclical but I get the feeling it's more cyclical, aren't we overdue for an ice age anyways? This thread was a bad idea b/c it shows how ensconced ppl become in ideas that have been inculcated mviaedia and friends. Good day sirs

Dom, this is the fossil fuel age planes and cars abound. Entertain for 1 min the idea that global warming is at least partially cyclical (moreso than man made). You think billionaire oil oligarchs can't hire cunning think tanks to spread disinfo on the matter? I dunno man, seems fishy to be real w u
Swerve
07-20-2013, 10:50 PM
It's most definitely cyclical.
The problem is that according to the data provided, the rate of increase is at a speed which has never been seen in history.
There is definitely a human impact; how large is anyone's guess. But it is indeed real.

The way I see it is this is what would be happening whether we are here or not. It has happened so many times before and will happen again, we definitely aren't helping but I find it typical of the human ego that we believe we could somehow damage the planet. The planet will be fine, it is we who are in trouble. The only thing we are putting in jeapordy is our own existence. We will be replaced and the planet will live on, we have no control over the warming of the earth, we may be contributing slightly but at most all we are doing is making the inevitable come a little sooner, it would happen with or without us.

i read some of this thread
the problem with "global warming" is the name. we've been having longer winters so people are like lol global warming aint real, even tho our summers have been hotter and hotter, more droughts across the world, wildfires etc.
but yo most science dudes agree on one thing, the term "global warming" sucks. its viewed as simple "climate change" now.
and nycspitz, big oil has every interest in keeping big oil around, and have been for years. its been behind basically everything, from prohibition to wars we are in today
lets say as a nation we wake up, we drive cars off ethanol and renewable fuel and we get rid of all the fossil fuels and bullshit right.
the major oil producing companies are still gonna sell oil to other nations. america is nothing without being a major competitor in all markets yo. theres a reason why we buy oil, and go to war over oil, EVEN WHEN OUR OWN COUNTRY produces enough oil to be self sustaining 10x over
its all money. big wigs. big business. if you think the oil companies can't do WHATEVER they want, you aint looking deep enough.
right now with our control of afghanistan and its lithium deposits and the control we have over parts of africa we could make cars that you plug in at night and drive across the country tomorrow in.
its not just money in selling oil. its money in all petroleum based products from paints to fuels to everything, on top of that there is an entire industry built around the use of those oil products, so everything from a gas station to a regular mechanic would be severely affected by it.
its the same as with prohibition yo. when alcohol was prohibited, there were big organisations and shit, all made to combat alcohol, when alcohol was legal again, they needed a new enemy or all those people lose there jobs, so they demonised weed. and it ties in too. because alcohol being prohibited had alot to do with cars running off diesel back in the day. diesel motors can run off ethanol, created in the distilling of alcohol. so big oil companies wanted to sell there petroleum based fuels and they helped blackball liquor. but like i was saying those groups out fighting alcohol needed a new enemy, so they turned to drugs, like weed and etc. meanwhile the first model T's body panels were made from a carbon fiber form of HEMP.
so really its just corporations going for eachothers necks
protip - oil never loses
uh-oh
07-21-2013, 01:39 PM
also i was reading somewhere that oil being finite is a myth, its renewable at much faster rates than previously believed, but im too lazy to look for it, and it was probably an article funded by the oil companies
In all honesty, climate change is beyond rational debate at this point. The fatalist viewpoint of "oh it's happening anyway with or without us" is almost as silly as "the human ego thinks it can harm the planet." We've already very noticeably harmed the planet significantly (acidification of oceans, rapid extinction of plant and animal species and the concurrent upheaval of many ecosystems, etc), and are capable of even greater damage through nuclear weapons. Make no mistake, we could literally destroy this planet. Not ego, fact.
There is plenty of damning evidence for how humans are contributing to climate change, but possibly the most significant one is the level of CO2 in the atmosphere since the industrial revolution. Yes we have seen glacial advance and retreat cycle around in the past, but never has a retreat been as rapid as it has been in the past 30 years, including a handful of years where our orbit was further away (which reduces the amount of solar energy we receive, usually making the glaciers advance a little. Instead, temperatures continued to rise and glaciers continued to retreat).
This thread gets a big intellectual thumbs down tbh.

man ur contradicting urself...u just implied the shit is mostly mad made but earlier in the thread u said it's anyone's guess whether it's more man made or more cyclical.
Basically all I hear is people screaming that there's a carbon problem and that the earth is screwed. I worked for a clean energy company and saw countless videos on the shit...could be true could be untrue.

07-21-2013, 03:30 PM
I agree with Sik
Chyeahhh!!!
07-21-2013, 03:33 PM
Yes but its not our fault. The other planets are heating and cooling at almost the rate. Fars I know they don't have any two legged carbon emitters walking around lol
What I said was that human activity is without question a part of the problem. If it seemed like I was implying more it is because I was contending the two "points" I mentioned. I was just emphasizing that human activity is not some tertiary involvement; it's significant. That being said, nobody could accurately predict what the real consequences will be - we can't even predict the weather a week from now that accurately. But there is plenty of evidence that indicts humankind in greater than usual increases since the late 1800s.

humanity is damned - it's Malthusian principle
since the peak in population's been confused with our pinnacle
Now explain to me how that states my belief that human population has already peaked. Hint: it doesn't.

The actual temperatures aren't the problem. The weather PATTERNS are. The large fluctuations show a global shift in weather systems. Global warming was just a marketable term. It's correctly dubbed "Climate Change" as someone earlier had pointed out.
