Not really my thing but the other day I heard about a certain Denver Bronco's captain? Who in the 90's agreed to play an entire season season for free, so the funds could be used to strengthen the team and push for a Super Bowl win. They went on to win it that year. I thought that was pretty fucking sick. Could you imagine a player (in any major team sport) going to that length? I can't. Players would sooner strike than make a gesture like that.
Anyone know the name of that player?
I also heard he was or is running for President?
Thy won the bowl in 97 and 98 so I don't remember this story cuz I was 2/3.
So I can not confirm/deny/give name of player.

John Elway?
It was his last chance to win a Super Bowl. And he was a Quaterback not captain.
uh-oh
08-01-2013, 12:03 PM
john elway was the QB
im disappointed in you guys. you guys dont remember terell davis? mile high salute? dude was a boss, if it wasnt for him elway would be marino with shittier stats
but yea i dunno he might have played for free, i just didnt know about it, and i doubt he's running for president. he is the president or head of operations of the denver broncos now tho
i know there qb NOW, peyton manning, got paid the minimum awhile back while on the colts so they could beef up there team
and joe flacco the qb of the ravens got his contract structured so it wont affect the salary cap for a few years, so his team can get talent in other spots, and him and the team have plans on restructuring it in the future so they can keep being competitive in free agency
but word dont know where you heard this
also you can just say football in thread titles for future reference.
...the Nagger
08-01-2013, 12:03 PM

It was a significant pay cut
By agreeing to restructure his contract, Elway saved the team $3.1 million against the salary cap for this season and provided the room to sign Smith. As a result Elway's base salary this year will be less than $600,000, making him one of the league's lowest-paid starting quarterbacks. "That guy always bails out this team," says defensive end Dan Williams. "He'd do anything to help this team win." Smith will do his part too. His six-sack total last season was his lowest since 1988, his rookie year, but would have ranked second on the '96 Broncos. "Not only will he be helping us," Elway points out, "but now we don't have to face him twice a year either."

Cause obviously being from bmore we HATE elway. He refused to accept being drafted by us and basically spit on my city. Such a golden boy piece of shit faggot. Said heonly wanted to play out west but turned us down to play baseball in NY.

esp in the 90s
players didn't get a 10th of what they get now they wouldn't have gave up the nothing they already got for literally nothing
and 97-98 are there only sbs so the players would have to be either shannon sharpe, terrelle davis, john elway, bill romanowski, ed mccaffrey, john mobley, ray crockett, keith traylor, steve stwater

Yeah taking a pay cut isn't that big of a deal. Players do it all the time. I'm nearly 100% certain the guy said "for free" that's what stuck out. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with the thread. And 600 thousand a year is hardly peanuts.

Yea I used to fuck with madden back on genesis.
Last 1 played was on Ps2 I think. It had the talk radio phone in feature for each week of games in career/franchise mode. Then they removed it next year. Dunno y, It was a sick feature. More sports games should have that shit

madden 08 and Madden 13 are good
the rest were a joke
and I expected Madden 10 to be Madden 13 like seriously. I always imagined what they did with 13 to be the no brainer simulation that you always wanted to create
I can't wait to start tweeking these games tho

I'm a hardcore fan of Madden 06 on reg Xbox/PS2 as well... that engine was love imo.

I played franchises mad heavy
so after week 2 of my franchise (I would spend hours doing trades and signing FA week 1 every year) it got really old and repetitive

I remember 2k having a nice NFL game way back. They had that fat loud ass presenter on it doing half time analysis and best try's of the week. Like the madden radio I like shit like that. Makes you feel like you're part of a real living breathing league. Graphics n gameplay were sick too.
Strikta
08-01-2013, 02:01 PM
Yessssss
2k had a fucking awesome football engine... but they faded out cuz they couldn't keep NFL rights. I remember they made a HOF Legends game that was dope too, & it had that engine.
Madden was just too dominant tho.... but at the time that 2k engine was far more advanced than EA's tho.
Just C
08-01-2013, 02:15 PM
Yeah man EA's a sports gaming beast like that. They just buy the rights to everything wiping out the competition.
...the Nagger
08-01-2013, 02:18 PM
2k sucked
they might have gotten better with time but at the time, cmon, they weren't real comp
real comp was a game like gameday/gamebreaker
Just C
08-01-2013, 02:59 PM
I never played them. But from what I remember 2k's gameplay and presentation was smoother than Maddens. But like I've said I'm not an NFL fan like that so you'd probably notice the flaws that I didn't .
uh-oh
08-01-2013, 03:11 PM
think they're talking 2k5
with TO on the cover. it was dope. i didnt know about it till years later tho, at the time it was madden or nothing
the madden with ray lewis on the front was the best one. think 2005? it had the hit stick, and introduced the truck stick i think? whichever one first had both, on PS2
was the best football game ever. from a playing them standpoint
the franchises aint in depth enough on any of them. it should be like the head coach game exactly, except you can play the games
that would be a perfect football game
Witty
